  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
Happy New Year! Folks, as discussed in the previous threads, this thread is not just to remember Frank, but also to share his New Years Resolution to get off our butts and ride more. A lot of us are getting older and we're carrying a few aches and pains, and sometimes it's easier to talk about riding than actually doing it, so it's important to get out there and get some miles under our tyres.

It's good for our bikes too, bikes that aren't ridden often tend to slowly self destruct, I'm currently in the process of revitalising several of my bikes that I've ignored for too long, so riding your bike, as opposed to parking it under a dust sheet and just bullsh1tting everyone about it, is actually good for your bikes too.

The rules were changed in 2022 to be a bit more inclusive. 1. To post in this thread, the ride you're posting must be a minimum of 50 miles. 50 miles isn't hard, we can all get out and do that, and it'll give our oil a chance to get warm, recharge our batteries (both the bikes, and ours) and burn off any condensation inside our engines and pipes. 2. This thread is no longer restricted to just SOHC4's. A lot of us have bikes other than SOHC4's that we like to ride, and take pics of, so it'll be good to be able to post here, and I for one will enjoy looking at pics of other bikes that you own, out on the road. 3. You can only claim one ride in one day, regardless of how many miles you do. (the more the better)

A new rule in 2024 was that you must post your rides within one week of the ride, no diary entries from 6 months ago will be accepted. Sometimes we can't post our rides on the same day, but a week should be long enough for everyone. Like previous years though, if you've posted your rides for 2026 in other threads, you're welcome to cut and paste them into this one. Also, keep a tally of how many rides you've done, it's not our job to keep a score for each participant. Kevin went above and beyond and did, but he shouldn't have to.

Apart from the above, this thread is all about getting off our comfy chairs and back onto our bikes, and enjoying some two wheeled exploring. We have a "clique" of riders here who really try hard to do their rides every year, and I hope that even more members here, from as many places around the globe, will participate and post pics of your bikes, your scenery, your riding buddies, what you're eating and drinking (in moderation, of course) and how you're enjoying your favourite hobby. Remember, 50 miles is the minimum, no speedo readings are necessary, we're all adults, and of course if you want to ride more than 50, well that's even better.

There will be an award (TBA) for the first rider to do 26 rides, and possibly some small trinket for each participant that completes their 26 rides, also TBA. For the last couple of years Bud made some fantastic keyrings to commemorate Frank's legacy and reward folks for making the effort, and Kevin mailed them all over the world, so hopefully we'll come up with something again this year.

I stole this pic from Frank's memorial thread, it shows Frank doing what he was promising himself that he'd try do more of when he started this thread in 2020, getting out as often as he could and enjoying riding his bikes. Let's all continue to get out there as often as we can in 2026, and just enjoy the ride!

Crap, I got out today for my annual New Years day ride and the battery on my camera went dead, and I didn't notice it till I got home.

Oh well. I'll get out in a couple days from now. The ride will be on the  Harley as it's the only one running at the moment.

Soon there ;)
Last year 2025,  my first ride happened April 2.
Only 3 months left for me  ;D

Until then I'll look forward to others ride adventures with photos here.
Terry has several bikes in need to be used to avoid the fuel system clogging up by too old fuel.
If fully retired, more time for it.

Hey a ride's a ride mate, and if you put in the effort, then record it here. (but pics are nice too) ;D

Stu, it might be winter on your side of the planet now, but you'll get some riding weather eventually, so don't be too bitter. Winter last year sucked, I had plenty of time on my hands, but the weather was sh1t. Spring and Autumn here are the best season's for riding, summer here gets very hot, and makes me want to risk riding without my jacket and heavy boots, but I know that if I go sliding down the road I'm juat gonna make a mark like a big red crayon.

Per, I got a shock recently when I found out that none of my bikes or cars were insured. Turns out the insurance company were charging my monthly premium against an old card that had expired, so even though I'd given them the latest card number when I insured the Ducati, they continued to charge the entire policy (20+ vehicles) against the old card, and when it was refused, they cancelled my insurance. No phone call, no text message, just an email that went straight to my spam folder.

It did give me pause to wonder if I need to insure bikes that aren't worth much, but I'll decide which ones to insure as time goes by. My more valuable bikes (K0, Z1-B, Ducati etc) are stored in a very secure storage facility, and only my VMax and ZZR1100 are here at home, and I've just had all new fences built, so it'll be hard for any of them to be stolen, but I suppose I should get some limited cover in case I hit a car, and it's my fault. Being an old retiree now, I have to watch those pennies........ ;D

When bad weather and winter stops our riding for 6 months... Time to move to where climate smiles more often?
Enough with 3 months of riding pause.

EDIT:
Terry, not possible with a "Seller" ensurance?
One plate on the bike you ride. All bikes have garage insurance.
Strap it on the bike before the ride.

When you feel it is too warm for a safe ride. Have a look at this ;D
Shovel today for less to do tomorrow after a refill.
25-30cm. (10-12")
Our Siberian cat had no rush back home. But she has fur between her toes and fingers.

A very early ride at dawn might be nice? Evenings when sun is not burning that much might call for the wild animals too?

I sorta miss snow......NOT..........had my share growing up.

I'm far enough south, that no snow, but still gets cold.

New Years day was 64, and cloudy, so that was my first ride.

Gonna be in the 70s this weekend. Gotta do the wifey to do list, of course.

.........................Then.....................

I have this ready to fire, so I may get it off the table and take it for it's first ride. Not sure how far I will venture out to.

I know it doesn't have four jugs, but still a vintage SOHC.

But, WTH, it's the adventure,,,,,,,,,!!!!!!!!

Let's get this show on the road!  Ride #1 01/05/2026 59.2 miles. The less traveled roads still have slick spots where they are shaded, but I took SR 560 North to US 36 over to Piqua, OH.  US 36 back from Piqua to SR 581 to SR 55 back over to SR 560 and home.

Not a very exciting ride, but the sun felt good even though it was just around 50F. Sorry no cool photos.  It's hard to stop for photos when you're all bundled up with clothing.

Forecast says rain most of the day tomorrow, but perhaps another riding opportunity on Wednesday.  We'll see may be a bit chill with the humidity from tomorrows rain lingering.

You will regret the bikes you DIDN'T buy much more than the ones you DID!!!  It's never too late to start a new adventure!

Well I finally got out for a ride yesterday. I did 4 hours of yard work chainsawing/chipping more branches from the tree behind my house that occasionally drops a couple of tons of branches (slowly, thankfully) onto my yard. I've had my new fences put up and my next yard project is to lay a concrete slab and install a 10'x10' storage shed, so I can clear a lot of crap out of my garage.

Anyway, by midday I was buggered, so I had a shower and dragged myself outside, fired up the VMax, and took it for a quick 60 miler, before I came home, had a late lunch and collapsed into my comfy chair.

I stopped and snapped a couple of pics in the carpark of the Upper Plenty (that's actually a place, as is Lower Plenty) Mechanics Institute Hall. I don't know much about the Mechanics Institute, but thought it was kind of appropriate.

It's going to get progressively hotter this week, so I don't know how many rides I'll get in, as riding in 90-100 degree F temps isn't any fun at all. ;D

Nice rides Gents! Keep em coming.
Some warm weather and potential for rain are coming to my area later this week.
A few days and potentially a couple of nights above freezing seem genuinely possible.

I'm watching Sunday's weather, it might be good enough to get me out for ride #1.

Thanks mate, it’s such a fun bike, nice upright sitting position, and 150 Bhp to keep the modern bikes honest. I’m taking a break from yard work today, this was about as close as I’ve come to losing a foot to a chainsaw, so I put everything away for today… ;D

Now we're rollin', 3 active participants so far. I've been strapped down with honey doozs and rain. Tomorrow the warden is out shopping so I may sneak out after watching my grand daughter.

Terry, that's too close with that chain saw. They leave a nasty wide and deep cut. I laid one across my face back in the 70's and wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Thanks guys, it was too close for comfort (WTF does that mean?) but I think I used up some credits with my little guardian angel today. It’s an electric chainsaw and has tons of power, I’d been chopping up 8” thick branches for firewood for Spotty, and it cut through them like butter, but the real benefit is that as soon as I let go the button, the chain immediately stopped, as opposed to my gas chainsaws that would keep running, and I think that was what saved me. All I have is a little skid mark (on my foot, I had a much bigger one in my undies) and some bruises to show for it. Oh well, tomorrow’s another day.. ;D

Yeah, it was too close. I’m lazy (we all know that) and so I only had my old elastic sided work boots on, but I might invest in something more suitable before I start chain sawing again. It’s going to be stinking hot tomorrow (over 100 degrees F) so I might take the day off and maybe go for a ride nice and early instead of doing some more yard work, and I’ll look for some protective gear on Amazon, so I have it in time for my next battle with my back yard. ;D

Some protective gear should keep that ankle shifting gears Terry, protect that ability as we all know how much you enjoy it. Cheers on letting go of the saw 'throttle' quickly.

Do you have a 750A somewhere?

Thanks guys, it was too close for comfort (WTF does that mean?) but I think I used up some credits with my little guardian angel today. It’s an electric chainsaw and has tons of power, I’d been chopping up 8” thick branches for firewood for Spotty, and it cut through them like butter, but the real benefit is that as soon as I let go the button, the chain immediately stopped, as opposed to my gas chainsaws that would keep running, and I think that was what saved me. All I have is a little skid mark (on my foot, I had a much bigger one in my undies) and some bruises to show for it. Oh well, tomorrow’s another day.. ;D

Terry….. Last Spring we had a huge ice storm, tons of limbs and trees down, and no power for 8 days. There was so much to do ai bought a new Stihl chainsaw and a few of us got together on a large wood chipper. It took most of 2025 to do most of the cleanup (stuff off our lawn and trails stays right where it landed).

In the late Winter, I was wearing my usual quilted coveralls, work boots and leather gloves, sawing through miles of downed limbs. I quickly discovered that 60-90 minutes a day was more than enough! One time I came I and when I unzipped the coveralls, they almost fell in TWO PIECES. I somehow managed to slit them open from the crotch, to the left knee! The insulation was hanging out but I never touched the inner material. I have absolutely no recollection of the incident but I was the only one with a saw!

Go on Amazon and buy a set of “safety chaps”. They are easy to use and work well. I no longer start the saw without pulling them on…..

Thanks guys, I looked at protective trousers and chaps on Amazon but couldn’t find my size in what was available, so looked at EBay and found some wrap around leg protectors that look like they are very good. I’m not going to fire up the chainsaw until they arrive.

My early morning ride didn’t happen. Last night I noticed that the fan on my big ducted cooler had stopped working so I climbed up on the roof at 9pm (still light) and pulled a cover off, to see what was going on. Looks like the fan motor is shot. I’m not going to get it fixed today and as it’s going to be 42 degrees C (108 degrees F) I searched for a couple of large portable units and the only store that had them in stock was several suburbs over, so I jumped in the ute and bought them before they sold out.

They won’t be great, but better than nothing. I can’t really complain about the swamp cooler, it’s lasted 20 years, so I’ll get it fixed before next summer. ;D

#1.  As yet, no snow in the lower elevations around here so the roads are still unsullied.  A cold front and rain was in the forecast, but the sun was out, so I fired up the faithful 750F for a ride.  I got 90 miles in before the rain came, at which time I headed for the barn.  I got back just after sunset, which still comes too dang early, but noticeably later than a couple of weeks ago.

I found a nice powerline road I never noticed before.  A few pics as usual.

It's a big country -

I have been watching this shed fall apart over the years -

Rain moving in all quadrants, so headed home since I wasn't set up for 40F and getting wet.
