The forums sohc4 says Not Secure
« on: January 20, 2026, 09:45:20 AM »
Does anyone else get this? Is this something I need to do at my end? Still running Windows 10. Also I can not see all posted pictures as I did a few days ago.

This is a Windows problem. Their programmers who make their "security rules" are 19 years old now, never knew a world without digital toys, and think that by using the 'rules' they learned while programming games for fun & profit that they can make the [digital] world safe for everyone.

Our forum gets "hit" by nefarious entities almost daily, and it is a marvelous tribute to our site's authors and maintenance-chasers that this place even survives, given what AI is doing to the 'net now.

Let's hear it for our webmasters: they don't have a simple job, now. There was a time (in the 1980s and 1990s) when you could put up a forum like this and the participants' typing mistakes were the biggest problem we had. Today we're being sieved daily by non-human programming that is designed to try to extract money from every site it can touch - and hold hostage - to deliver funds to the programmers who have nothing better to do in life than try to thieve something from someone else so they don't have to do actual work themselves. I spent decades programming factories to fight this crap off, and today it's becoming automated.

This isn't a rant. It's the truth.

I agree with you HondaMan, but the question is, are the webmasters going do the fix this, or must I do something with windows at my end?

I've lost access to our site about twice a month on average since about 4 months ago. It just acts like it's gone, but without posting a "404" message. One of our fellow SOHC4 riders who lives near me and is a computer geek beyond me (I did/do mostly machine automation, he does computer systems maintenance automation) said he is very busy initializing and commissioning whole new "hard drives" online, which are the big computer centers you hear about (and maybe see here and there) that are being deployed to create gigantic computer storage space (you can think of it as being disk storage, but it's both disc and solid-state combined). Last summer a "storage facility" was completed-to-startup north of here in Wyoming, a facility with memory storage racks the size of semi-trailer trucks, thousands of them in this building. He is one of the guys who brings the new memory online, from his spare bedroom here in the Denver metro area. This sort of 'tech' is what you're hearing about in the media that is consuming vast amounts of electrical power: they are being built in areas where there isn't so much city that can get in the way of the massive infrastructure needed (cooling water, whole substations of electricity, stuff like that). When these new facilities go online (bank-by-bank) sometimes the local Internet servers get into an argument with the new storage facility's computers over which one has access to a given site: when this happens the site can go "404" (or "dark") for a while until one of them wins the fight.

Programmers tell me it isn't really a "fight", exactly, then go on to describe how it involves stealing each other's I/O, power, server attention, priorities on the Web, and some other things: sure sounds like a fight to me?

For years now I have been advocating for the return of public flogging for certain egregious offenses such as this.  Other things might include causing accidents while messing with a cell phone while driving, vandalism, talking on the cell phone in the theater while a movie is playing, raising a ruckus on an airliner in flight, stuff like that.  I am sure everyone will have their own suggestions for thoughtless actions that would be appropriate for this.  I am not suggesting using a bullwhip or cat'o'nine tails, thereby cutting someone to ribbons.  But a judiciously applied leather razor strop might be the ticket.  I can't help but think the deterrence factor would be huge if done publicly.  Could even be streamed on the interwebs for wider distribution.  However before someone suggests charging to see the stream to fill government coffers, or contracting out/outsourcing the flogging, absolutely not.  If money is involved, it will be abused, people will inevitably be unjustifiably flogged when maybe a day in the stocks would be more appropriate.  I want to be reasonable about this.

I disagree! I think the cat'o'nine tails needs an upgrade to...ten? Eleven? One in each hand?

Well, some people will no doubt cite that pesky 8th Amendment, thus my inclusion of the word judicious.  Flaying with a cat'o'nine tails may be considered a little excessive, whereas leaving a few welts with a strop might pass muster. ;)

The security warning has been around for years, with XP, 10, and 11. Using Firefox as a browser, it shows Not Secure next to the URL like Steve noted. This is because the forum doesn't use an SSL certificate, which is used for commercial websites to ensure credit card transactions and such. Ignore the warnings, and don't post sensitive information where it can be viewed publicly. ;)

The spammers, which are mostly harmless, have been kept at bay, and the scammers, which should be flogged IMHO, are removed as soon as they are discovered.

Regarding problems accessing the site, there has been a tremendous amount of traffic lately, most likely caused by search "bots". The traffic has hit peaks at 11:00-1:30 Pacific Time the last week or so, and once the number of viewers gets above 17,000 the site slows down, and somewhere around 20,000 the site becomes unresponsive due to overload. If you scroll down to the bottom of the home page there are forum statistics that show how many guests and members are currently viewing the site, plus the maximum for the day.

How about all the photos that can not be opened ( error 404). Sorry if this has been addressed before ,but it's frustrating to search for something and you get images that can not be opened and these new posts.

Yes, the missing attachment thing is an known problem, separate from the security thing and high traffic problems:

I have also seen problems that looked like high traffic.
Evenings for me, 7-9 pm. US east coast minus 6 hours

Is it huge AI servers that add load on the site?

Yep, my wife's new computer has Win11 and it shows the same nonsense on it.
I wonder...does this imply that Windows 11 is not secure? None of the other Windows were, either...

The "Not Secure" issue is created at the forum end, not anyone's PC.

I've been running and maintaining multiple forums for 20 something years I guess, and I'm happy to help out or offer advice on how to resolve this.

Getting rid of the attack bots is fairly trivial too.

Drop me a message if you want any help.
