The forums sohc4 says Not Secure
« on: January 20, 2026, 09:45:20 AM »
Does anyone else get this? Is this something I need to do at my end? Still running Windows 10. Also I can not see all posted pictures as I did a few days ago.

This is a Windows problem. Their programmers who make their "security rules" are 19 years old now, never knew a world without digital toys, and think that by using the 'rules' they learned while programming games for fun & profit that they can make the [digital] world safe for everyone.

Our forum gets "hit" by nefarious entities almost daily, and it is a marvelous tribute to our site's authors and maintenance-chasers that this place even survives, given what AI is doing to the 'net now.

Let's hear it for our webmasters: they don't have a simple job, now. There was a time (in the 1980s and 1990s) when you could put up a forum like this and the participants' typing mistakes were the biggest problem we had. Today we're being sieved daily by non-human programming that is designed to try to extract money from every site it can touch - and hold hostage - to deliver funds to the programmers who have nothing better to do in life than try to thieve something from someone else so they don't have to do actual work themselves. I spent decades programming factories to fight this crap off, and today it's becoming automated.

This isn't a rant. It's the truth.

I agree with you HondaMan, but the question is, are the webmasters going do the fix this, or must I do something with windows at my end?

I've lost access to our site about twice a month on average since about 4 months ago. It just acts like it's gone, but without posting a "404" message. One of our fellow SOHC4 riders who lives near me and is a computer geek beyond me (I did/do mostly machine automation, he does computer systems maintenance automation) said he is very busy initializing and commissioning whole new "hard drives" online, which are the big computer centers you hear about (and maybe see here and there) that are being deployed to create gigantic computer storage space (you can think of it as being disk storage, but it's both disc and solid-state combined). Last summer a "storage facility" was completed-to-startup north of here in Wyoming, a facility with memory storage racks the size of semi-trailer trucks, thousands of them in this building. He is one of the guys who brings the new memory online, from his spare bedroom here in the Denver metro area. This sort of 'tech' is what you're hearing about in the media that is consuming vast amounts of electrical power: they are being built in areas where there isn't so much city that can get in the way of the massive infrastructure needed (cooling water, whole substations of electricity, stuff like that). When these new facilities go online (bank-by-bank) sometimes the local Internet servers get into an argument with the new storage facility's computers over which one has access to a given site: when this happens the site can go "404" (or "dark") for a while until one of them wins the fight.

Programmers tell me it isn't really a "fight", exactly, then go on to describe how it involves stealing each other's I/O, power, server attention, priorities on the Web, and some other things: sure sounds like a fight to me?

I have Windows 11 and directly to the left of the URL bar it says "Not secure".

This would be a good question for Glenn in the News & Info area...

For years now I have been advocating for the return of public flogging for certain egregious offenses such as this.  Other things might include causing accidents while messing with a cell phone while driving, vandalism, talking on the cell phone in the theater while a movie is playing, raising a ruckus on an airliner in flight, stuff like that.  I am sure everyone will have their own suggestions for thoughtless actions that would be appropriate for this.  I am not suggesting using a bullwhip or cat'o'nine tails, thereby cutting someone to ribbons.  But a judiciously applied leather razor strop might be the ticket.  I can't help but think the deterrence factor would be huge if done publicly.  Could even be streamed on the interwebs for wider distribution.  However before someone suggests charging to see the stream to fill government coffers, or contracting out/outsourcing the flogging, absolutely not.  If money is involved, it will be abused, people will inevitably be unjustifiably flogged when maybe a day in the stocks would be more appropriate.  I want to be reasonable about this.

I disagree! I think the cat'o'nine tails needs an upgrade to...ten? Eleven? One in each hand?
