Cylinder and Head Dowels
« on: January 20, 2026, 02:00:33 PM »
Preparing to install the cylinder and head on my '78 750K. I have 12 12mm dowels, 4 are 18mm long and 8 are 14mm long. Which go where? The three different books I have do not specify. It appears to me that the 4 18mm would go on the front outside cylinder studs, 2 between the cylinder and case and 2 between the cylinder and the head. While the 8 14 mm would go on top of the head where the cam towers are placed. Thanks for the input!

Check out a parts list it will give dimensions for the parts and positions

Good idea to measure the depth in case vs cylinder block to ensure the total is enough. Not fun to find out that there is a gap when everything is tightened.18 mm should be OK.

I have seen 20-22 mm lengths for the bottom ones.

Same for cylinder vs head. 18mm.
Check those, I have used shorter when 18mm was too tall.

8 oil return holes with their special pins with o-rings. Called special pins something, 14mm. If cylinder has been milled, the pin will be too tall and need to be grinded shorter

Sit flush with gasket surface. It will ensure that the tall sealing o-ring will not collapse.

The lenghts of the lower have changed during the years.
