Steve….. Cut away of gearbox and final drive. At the left end of the shaft was a flywheel with the connecting rod pinned to the outer face (no crankshaft). Magneto was driven off the other end of the main shaft..

No crankshaft, that's what threw me. Agreed, brillant.
