350F engine removal question
« on: August 12, 2007, 07:54:47 PM »
Hi all -
Am JUST about ready to remove the engine from my 350F frame. I've disconnected everything
(drive chain, carbs, tach cable, clutch cable, mufflers, left crank case cover, all wires, spark plug caps, motor mounts) and am ready to slide the engine out of the frame. However, considering the oil pan sits about 3 inches below the frame and the breather cover on the top end only has about 1 inch clearance from the top of the frame, I don't think I'll have enough space to lift it up and slide it out. Any suggestions? Do I need to tear apart the top end before removing??? Thanks in advance! (Pictures of the rebuild to come).

Don't you tilt it forward, pull it back, then lift up..... do the hokey pokey and turn it all around?

You should be able to get the engine out by merely removing the breather cover and oil filter housing.  That's how I got one out and a new one in!  There are recipies on the forum for taking the engine out by laying the bike on it's side, but I had a friend help me for only a few minutes and it was no problem making the swap while the bike was on the centerstand.

The shop manual does not say anything about removing the breather cover or oil pan in order to remove the engine.
Page 11 details the sequence of parts removal to remove engine intact from frame.
good luck!

If you do remove the oil pan, the motor will slide out with lots of room to spare. This is the easy way, IMO

Thanks for your help guys. I took off the breather cover and the oil pan and it slid right out of the frame with very little effort! Thanks again for the tips. Now comes the fun part - tearing it apart!
