She lives, fired up today !
« on: August 15, 2007, 12:00:27 PM »
Well I got the new battery yesterday, had to go to the dentist this morning so I was going to spend an afternoon checking out everything electrical then fire her up tomorrow, however the 12 year old grandson (Dean) arrived and he got very excited about starting her up, as he helped me put the frame on the engine I went along.
Took a long time to get the oil pressure light off, I put one litre of oil in the tank and one litre in the cam cover, it took a long time for the oil light to go out, so long that I started to suspect the oil pressure switch, but a look into the cam cover showed no sign of oil spraying around so I carried on. The oil light eventually went out, then I waited a few more minutes turning her over until I could see oil spraying about in the cam cover. Plugs in and she fired up on the second push of the button. I was amazed, Dean was over the moon, he's seen the bike progress from a bare frame to the finished article.
The only real snag was the ignition switch, it gave up the ghost while we were getting the oil pressure up, rather than disappoint Dean I put a jumper wire in the cable block and carried on. I later changed out the switch for the one on my F2 which works great.
Got to fit the tacho and speedo cables, change out some bulbs, fit the new registration plate and she should be ready for the road.

YIPPEE

No excuses for all the photos I'm over the moon

And now the Grandson has a great memory, a bit of knowledge, and an old Honda story that starts " Back when I was twelve my Grandpa ..."

That is a truly fantastic moment.

Thanks for all the kind comments guys, hopefully when I've have sorted out the little niggles I can actually ride it, Paul, yes they are the original bars, they need re chroming but that will have to wait, Mick the rear mudguard was from an F2 that was in a job lot of CB750 parts that I bought from eBay. When the next project is done (F2) I'll have a lot of spares to get rid of, along the way I've picked up all sorts of stuff.

Cheers

Den

Hi Rocker, it wasn't that simple, it was a ground up restoration, most of what you see on the before photo is grease that I applied before going overseas in 1994, I came back in 2004 and once I'd finished renovating the house started on the bike in 2006.

Thanks for the pics. New chrome always helps shine up our old bikes!

I picked up a 74 CB550 for cheap that came with a spare motor:

spare motor

I would like it to shine up nice like yours. I've read a lot of users posts about polishing the block then applying a clear coat. I've heard positives and negatives to doing that. Did you clear coat your motor?
