Boms Away Ingestion
« on: August 18, 2007, 09:05:36 AM »
Hey guys:

I was polishing my motorcycling and my 2 yr old son came up to me announced.  I looked over and he had my Boms Away metal polish up to his mouth (the cap was open).  I am not sure if he drank any or not.   I don't think he got much, if any, and he doesn't seem to have any ill effects, but I am still a bit worried.  I tried calling and emailing the company to see if there are harmful ingredients, but there was no answer.  Does anyone here have any idea what's in Boms Away?  What about other metal polishes are there some basic ingredients in all polishes?  To me, Boms Away seems less harsh that most polishes.

Thank you,
Enforcer

There should be a 1-800 number on the product.  Call and ask for an MSDS.

Before the company sends you a sheet, I would suggest you call the poison control center, they have all the data.

You shouldn't be writing or reading this: you should already be in the emergency room with the kid and the product for them to decide. They will call the poison center, or make the kid a "stomach wash" just in case. How much poison would you let your kid have?

Good luck and keep us informed.

+1

We see a fair amount of kids this way.  Often they haven't ingested enough to be toxic, but YOU CAN'T TAKE CHANCES.  If this has happened once, it can happen again (we've had 4 kids).  This little guy has a long career ahead of him.  If you do have to go to the ED in the future, bring the container with you...  If you're out in th boonies, call the ER on your cell phone on the way in.

Hope he's okay!

Hey guys:  Thank you for your help.  My son is doing fine and apparently didn't get much if any ingested.

By the way, the first thing I did was call his pediatrician and followed her advice.  I wrote this post the day after because I was still worried about him.

Thanks.

That makes sense. I know this forum is full of good advice, but I couldn't believe anybody would ask here for advice before asking a doctor.... ;D

I understand you. When these things happen, even when everything seems to be OK, it's good to ask for some more opinions or even similar experiences to get some peace of mind.

Glad the kid is OK. You can never bee too careful. My 4 year old daughter smashed his four fingers this morning while closing the car door. I know every kid will smash the fingers sooner or later, and they don't learn the lesson until they do. I'm just glad she didn't break any bone, but it's hard to hear her cry and see her peeled finger...  :'(
