Running "drag" pipes. Any way to quiet them down
« on: September 09, 2007, 08:53:43 PM »
Im running a set of open drag pipes, 4 into 4. Theyre loud, and i need something to get the inspected with that wont cost too much. Just needs to look legit and legal for a day.

Swap out headers with what was on there before.  You don't have mufflers now, there's no way to make them quiet.  After it's inspected, go back to your drag pipes if you choose.  Me personally, I've got enough high frequency hearing loss from work without having to deal with open headers.  Take a couple hour long ride with those (no ear plugs ya cheater) and let us know if you're going to keep those pipes.

JC Whitney has some internal baffels that you just slip inside your pipes. I have drag pipes on my 78 750 and i use them.

If anyone decides to try these, I would definitely be interested in their results.  I suppose you could wrap these with fiberglass as well to quite them down even further.

I think even with the baffles you'll have a hard time with an inspection. :-\  Obviously depends on what your state's regs are, but I think you'll find you're going to need more pipe length to get the dB's low enough. You'd have to read your local regs, but some states actually require a muffler, and I doubt the baffles would count in that case.
