Drag bars on my cb550
« on: September 30, 2007, 05:27:25 PM »
I got a great deal on this 75cb550 and I want to CAFE it.Starting from the top and moving downward. I loosend  the controls only to my supprise to find that its wired from the inside.I picked up some drag bars{no pre drilled holes} so I will have to run the wires outside of the bar, that to me is ok.I just dont know how to remove these controls without cutting or damaging the wires any help would be appreciated
thx ??? ???

You'll have to disconnect the wires where they hook up to the main wiring harness inside the headlight bucket, and then pull them through the handlebar.

Just down load the wiring diagram and check all the wires before you disconnect anything. And your only a quick post away from all the help you will ever need right here on this forum. You can do this easily. If your like most of us you have more time than money, don't worry about time just double check first.

I normally tag the ends of the wires with a bit of masking tape and number them along with the wires they connect to.  Being largely color blind, it works for me and prevents any mistakes when hooking things back up.

Good luck with the project.

That's a good suggestion, and I've used that method before, too.  It's more of a peace of mind thing, though, (at least for those of us who can see colors ;))  because Honda did a good job of color-coding all the wires, so it's just a matter of plugging them all back into their corresponding wires in the harness.

It's really not a tough job at all.  Just pull out the headlight, and unplug the wires that match the ones that come from the inside of the switch housings.  The hard part comes when you go to re-thread the wires back through the handlebars, but since you're going to run them on the outside, that's not an issue.

I had some of those address label sheets for printing return address labels, it works great for labeling wires but I am not sure if they will make the journey through the holes on the bars without tearing.

MY WIFES GOT SOME OF THOSE ADDRESS LABLES BUT I AM GONNA GO WITH THE "DON" AS IN DONZON WITH THIS ONE. MASKING TAPE HAS THE 'STICKY STUFF' THAT I FEEL WILL HOLD UP ON THEIR JOURNEY THROUGH THOSE HANDLE BARS. I COULDNT FIND ANY IN THE HOUSE OR GARAGE SO A TRIP TO THE DEPOT IS IN ORDER.MAYBE SOHC4 COULD ALSO BE THE "YOU CAN DO IT WE CAN HELP

Another thing that always helps tremendously is to take a couple of close-up pictures with a digital camera before you start unplugging anything.  That way when you get thoroughly confused trying to put it all back together, you can look at the pictures to see what it's supposed to look like.
