1978 CB550K Ignition replacement.....difficult?
« on: October 03, 2007, 10:54:24 AM »
I'm not terribly saavy when it comes to motorcyle repair.........however, I have a new ignition and I'm wondering how difficult it would be to replace it myself.  If too much disassembly is involved, I'll leave it to the pros...but if not, I'd love to do it myself.

Any advice would be greatly apprecaited!
FYI, the ignition is mounted just underneath the light panel (neutral, turn signals etc) Rather than on the left side of the bike.
Thanks in advance!
Joey

you mean the ignition switch where you put the key in? If so, that is super easy. I replaced it right after I purchased it out on the sidewalk outside the shop!

Yep, that's what I mean!  I lost the key and have to decide whether or not to try my hand at it....sounds like something I can handle.....thanks for your response!

On my '73, its just a plastic connection thingy that only plugs one way into another one on the wiring harness.  . .pretty much idiot proof.

I know they moved the ignition up to near the gauges on later years so I don't know if it will still be that easy?

Its really easy, just unscrew the bolts on the old one, slide it out of the housing, undo the connection, then install the new one. Should take about 10 min.Go for it
