In the '70s, that was the hot set up. What the Antique Club would call "period modified". If you had REALLY tight elephant bells, you'd understand...
If you thnk elephant bells are something Indians put on their beasts of burden to make a nice noise, you'll never get it.  :D

If you're talking about the seat back, it was born of function.  Pillion riders enjoy having some back support, or something to stabilize their upper body while riding.  It is much less fatiguing.  Up front we have the bars to hold onto.   Plus the driver can anticipate movements needed for steering purposes while the passenger can only guess.

The extended forks slow the steering.  This makes turnpike cruising less demanding on the driver and allows him/her to take naps during long straight stretches of open highway.  It is the passengers responsibility to tap the driver on the shoulder when a turn approaches that can't be negotiated with passenger leaning. ;)

Actually that is almost exactly the type of seat that was on my CB500K0 when I bought it.  It came with matching "Ape Hanger" bars and yes it was hideous.  I was joking with a customer who also rides, about the seat and bars, and he actually got all excited and told me he would BUY them from me! I can't believe there are people who actually still want this junk.  It's not folk art, it's junk, believe me.
