When I taught my son to ride last year I told him the most important thing to remember is that everyone in a car is trying to kill him. He laughed when I told him that. I didn't. I've sent a link to this post to him just to remind him. They can't see us, even when they are looking right at us.

I'm glad you're able to tell the story, Andy.

Glad you are OK!  Too many dolts preoccupied with stuff more important than respecting the road and other drivers - stuff like shaving a few seconds off their transit time, taking a cell phone call, texting in traffic, adjusting the stereo. . . .  much more important stuff.   ::)

You are one lucky dude. I just got my 78 cb750k running about 2 weeks ago. I haven't riden in a long time so I'm being extra cautious. 2 times over the last week-end I had people just pull out right in front of me to the degree that I had to come to a full stop to keep from T-boning them. They just give you a sh--y grin and keep going. I'm going shopping for a truck horn. At least I can try and break their eardrums.

I would highly recommend the Stebel Nautilus air horn for waking people the f**k up. . . .lol. Though it wouldn't have helped in this accident scenario, I have used mine on several occasions to get drivers about to pull into my path and looking the other way, to NOT cream me (with just a 'friendly' tap on the horn). I also gave a good blast to a dumb lady gabbing on her cell phone that started to drift over with no lookie/no signals while parallel to me. Her reaction that she thought she was about to be run over by a semi or something, was gold.   ;D

These can be a bit spendy but I got my all chrome one off of feeBay for like $39.00, so price around. Its an air horn with its own mini compressor so you will need a relay and some heavy wire to hook it up, as it will draw a bit of current.

Another possibility for horns that make the hair on the back of your neck stand up are a couple of the Fiame horns they used to use on BMW's. Get 'em used on ebay. They don't draw much juice.

Good reactions by you both. You looking for a way out and her for knocking on the drivers window! Sign of a seasoned rider & passenger to stay cool.

I too am glad it turned out ok Andy and I can't help but chuckle when I imagine her trying to get that guys attention. Better buy her a beer too Mick750F.

Andy, having driven over in your neck of the woods half of last year they drive as badly as they do in NY. Glad you are OK and hope to see you when I begin traveling up that way I hope to see you and some of the guys.

Glad you are both ok and aren't letting it get you down. It just instills in you a bit more...........GOTTA BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!! I have been following the thread about the 20 yr. old just killed doing the stunt bs. Here you are doing your thing and some jack-ass almost nails you. It can come from many different directions in many differerent scenarios. I just cannot stress enough to anyone how aware you have to be out there weather you are going up to the corner to fill your tank or out on a cross country run. Any time you can avoid conjested areas and your s#@% is together (bike & mind).... you have a decent chance. Take care Andy!!!!........(need to read some more of your stories on the road!!!!!!)

Since there was actual contact and the other guy was in the wrong, did the thought cross your mind to simply sit down on the curb rubbing your leg and have a witness call the cops to give the guy a ticket?   I ride every day, including a fair amount of downtown Houston battle, and have had a number of close calls but never any contact.  I've already concluded that if I ever get tagged by an idiot driver, they will be "on the hook" big time.  Call it tough love if you want, but it might save the next guy from getting killed.

I'm telling you, its one of the best things I have done on my bike yet - both in safety and (sick) pleasure. .  . he he he.

Some guys at the car / motorcycle show last week, out in the parking lot, asked what it was (big shiny chrome air horn thingy in place of stock horn) and I said it was a loud aftermarket horn. One guy replied "Oh right, motorcycle horns are never loud" with a smirk so I smiled and hit the button. It was hilarious to see him jump a bit and his friends all laugh.   :-*

Now only if there were an aftermarket oil slick generator for the back (great for tail gaters!)
