My Crazy Accident Today!!!
« on: November 03, 2007, 02:56:11 PM »
First, I wasn’t on my bike, it was the car.

Second, no major damage or injuries.

Third, totally not my fault.

Fourth, it involved a police chase!

My wife and I live in State College PA and we were on our way to the PSU game after a quick stop to get a coffee.  I was stopped at an intersection for a RED light when all of a sudden I was hit from behind.  It was a decent jolt and it snapped our heads.  I looked in the rearview to see a female driver on the cell phone.  I stepped out of the car told and motioned for her to pull over into a parking area.  When the light turned green I made a right into the parking area and she turned left and fled the scene.  My wife was already on the cell phone with 911 and we reported what just happened.

Traffic was very heavy because of the football game so by the time I could head in her general direction, it was a good five minutes.  Karma was on our side because about ten minutes later we spotted her going in the opposite direction.  Again, I had to cross traffic and try to catch up.  By this time my wife was on the phone with the police dispatch and giving them the driver’s general heading.  Eventually, I got pretty close to her, but couldn’t read her plate.  She must have spotted us in her rearview because she ran two red lights to try and put some distance between us, which worked.

All of a sudden a police car passed us and was on her tail.  We followed the police car at some distance and watched as the driver that hit me tried to elude the police car.  Eventually two other police cars, three in total, boxed her in and brought the chase to a stop, after she ran up onto a curb to try and get around the road block. Her car got hung up and her rear wheels were off the ground.

Turns out, she was driving with a suspended license, uninsured, had her two year old child in the back seat and not in a car seat.  The car was a stolen rental, and there was a warrant for her arrest!  Holy Cow!

The police know us well; my wife is a District Judge, so the police and my wife had a good laugh.  I wasn’t too happy.  It made us late for the football game.  What is funny however is that this woman will appear before my wife in the court room.

Glad you're alright, I cringed when I read the title and thought about your new hot rod.

What is funny however is that this woman will appear before my wife in the court room.

Is that proper?

I was involved in something like that once.
Glad you're O.K.--We better not get started on cell phones--right ?

Most likely they will have to move her hearing to another judge.

At least in NY, there's a rider on YOUR insurance called "Supplemental Uninsured Motorist" (SUM).  It allows you to actually recoup damages from your own insurance company up to the limitations of your SUM clause to cover for damages sustained from an uninsured motorist.

Glad to hear everyone's OK-ish.  If anything hurts, you should probably get to a doctor ASAP to make sure everything's alright and to start the officiel paper trail.

And how was the game?  ;)

Yes we have that coverage in NY, but it is real low. But at least it is something.

I have found that it is what you set it to be.  I used to have $100K SUM, but after my wife's accident have bumped it up to $250K or so, for a nominal rate adjustment.  The question is can your lawyer prove the amount outstanding so you can collect.  Live and learn...

Yes, we have uninsured and under insured motrist insurance on our policy.  When my wife was in private practice she say way too many cases of this type so now we have the best policy money can buy.  Full Tort plus 500k to 1 million riders on nearly everything.  The premiums suck, but only a $100 dollar deductible.

Ben,

Thanks for the advice.  I had a few beers and the neck feels great.  I am sure it isn't whiplash, just a slight strain.  I have had worse.

Keep an eye on that neck pain Sparty, I had a guy run up my arse a few years ago when I was stopped waiting to turn right, anyway, like you, there wasn't much damage done to my car, (whereas his car was a mess (my tow bar took the hit) so feeling sorry for him, I let it go. I've had bad neck pain on and off now for  5 years since it happened, and I know that it was the "rear ender" that caused it. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Getting hit from the rear while stopped is one of my two greatest bike fears....the other is hitting a deer. I've been hit driving in cars three times while stopped...all by sober people that were obviously distracted.  ::)

Just saw on the news - it was Britney Spears!

Just goes to show, when you get hit by a crazy chick yakkin' on the mobile with a kid bouncing around in the back seat, first thing you do is smack her upside her head with the phone and make sure the kid sees you do it.  Best way to make sure they don't follow in their mom's footsteps.

Sad for the kid involved.  Hope there's a stable guardian to look after them when mom's trading favours for smokes in the pen.

OK, so it's been 4 months.  Any chance Sparty has an update?

Update:  The woman who hit me was arrested for failing to appear in court for her citations (fleeing the scene of an accident, driving on a suspended license, endangering the welfare of a child).

I had to pay a $500 deductible for the $972 worth of damage she caused.  She had no insurance.  I can take her to small claims court for the $972, but I would never see the money anyway because she doesn’t have a job.  So, I basically got railed.

To top it off – This is a real kick in the sack.  About a two weeks after I had the rear end of my car fixed, some smuck must have hit my rear bumper in the grocery parking lot because there was a 12 inch mark of white paint on it when I came out with my groceries.  I haven’t buffed it out yet because the paint is still too fresh.

Thanks for reminding me that I am out $500 because of a stupid, no good, worthless, dirtbag!

You know what might cheer you up sparty,

Just listen to that sound file of your bike hitting 9k after you got it together. I saved a copy on my desktop and listen to it for inspiration now and then  ;)

Sorry to hear about your crappy deal man.

 Keep your chin up,
     Matt.
