How much to pay for a 71 750 parts bike?
« on: November 25, 2007, 08:31:19 AM »
It ran cranked last year.  Has good compression.  Seller will be selling as a parts bike and not a runner.  Missing the speedo, sidecovers, turn signals, mirrors and maybe some other small items.  Chrome is not good either.   Exhaust is rusted out on the bottom also.  No Title If I get it, it would be in hopes of making it a runner. Will not restore.  Will make either a custom build or cafe, so missing/rusted items should not be an issue. How much is a good offer for this bike?  Seller wants $325 or best offer.

I'm no expert, but it looks like the parts alone are worth more than that.  Bring the guy a cold beer, and sweetly offer him what you're willing to pay ($250? $275?) with no pressure.  If he sticks to his price, and you want it, buy it.  Just be sure you clearly know what you're buying, so that you won't have regrets or bad feelings later.

You're building quite the little stable there... ;D

Take a good look at the oil, and try to get the sprocket cover off the motor to check for case welding/damage.. you may need a cup of solvent and a brush.. its messy.

If the oil is w/o water and cases check out it is sort of worth it..except..

Registration..

Dont know the drill down there but it can be a bit of work.. sometimes not so bad.. usually  the wurst case scenario you have to buy another titled frame or bike..except..

If it is hot.. then you loose the bike..

except....

if you really want it and take it apart first, and it is hot, you only loose the frame..

Usually if the person looks like they have lived where they are for a bit, and dont get too wierd when you mention you will run the number through the police in case it is stolen.. you will be OK..

I don't have the benefit of tinkering with the bike because it is in Texas and I am in Louisiana.  Here's the deal I proposed to him:

Quote
My next offer will be $275 cash (so you won't be charged by Paypal). Before I formally make the offer of $275 cash, please provide the VIN number off the frame for the bike.  Upon receiving the VIN off the frame, I will make the $275.  When I come to get the bike, I will pay you cash and you will write a bill of sale. I will be driving from Baton Rouge, LA so I can't come pick it up until next weekend.  These will be the terms of the offer.  I don't want to sound so harsh about the terms, but please understand that I can't get pulled over coming from Texas to Louisiana with a hot bike, which is why I will need to run the VIN on the bike prior to formally making an offer.  Thanks.

I wouldnt have offered more than $100 for that bike. Id also look in the gas tank for rust as well as following 754s advice about the sprocket cover. Looks a bit trashed to me and with no speedo who knows the real mileage  ::) :P

Good luck

He hasn't sent the VIN yet, so it's not a done deal.  I originally offered $150 but he wouldn't take it.

If I were you I would get it even at his price, but try to haggle a little, and then make a CHEAP restoration with it, that is, make it a runner, clean all the rust you can with steel wool but with everything installed whenever possible. The moment you start to disassembly you will find yourself soon with a valve in your hand and a piston in the other.

Seem to me the forks are bent.

Ahh you guys are gonna scare her now..

If you are set on having a 71 CB and cases are good it is worth it, you need a good motor as a basis.. it will be a project involving time though..

Something is up with this bike.  I already told you guys what I wrote to him, and this is his response:

Quote
Thank you for your offer. I have considered it.
You need to remember that I offered this bike as a PARTS bike . A parts vehicle is just that, parts. That being said, normally I would not object to providing a vin # , But in this case, the vin # is irrevelant, since this is not offered as a complete or fun#$%*ional vehicle. I have owned this for well over ten years and it looked like it hadn't been on the road in a good many years when I got it. DMV records only go back fifteen years , so even if it was "Hot" ,which it is not, there wouldn't be records on it any ways. so if you would like to know what it is come see for yourself. You said you did not want to sound "harsh". I don't belive you are harsh , but rather bossy. And I am out of practice at taking orders. No Deal.

Didn't want to give me the VIN.  Probably HOT. Beware of ebay seller mongostaywithsheriffbart ebay item # 110196309902

Link to auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&item=110196309902

I can't haul a bike from Texas to Louisiana with no paperwork.  This guy was never going to give me paperwork.  He didn't even want to give me the VIN.  A good way to end up in jail.  Bad business.

Might not be hot.. could be liened up the hoop though..

Looks like good parts if the guy will give you a bill of sale for the engine with # and you take everything but the frame...

Common sense though says it should sta in the Lone Star state..

yeah, glad I saved my time, effort & money.  Thought he wanted a bit much for a non-runner, anyway.

A VIN is about 12 characters. His response took far more than that. Seems there is only one reason he would not want to give you the VIN. If he didn't stole the bike, he knows it was stolen.

Move away from it. There would probably somebody else with less scruples that will buy it and we will soon buy the parts on evilBay. Even if cheap, it is not such a killer deal, you are not losing anything.

He's already got a higher bid on Ebay than you would have paid.  I guess everyone will come out happy.

What you got there was just a pile of parts that happened to be bolted together to resemble a bike. Any value would be determined by the condition of the parts. The 1971 rear fender and taillight are worth some money - only if they are good and those (from the small shot) didn't look that good. Ditto for the instruments.
$325 will buy a pile of parts, just not bolted together. For what you got there, add to it no papers, getting the pile 'o parts would be a better idea.
