Looks REAL nice.... I hope those tail lights are bright enough.  Looks like you would get ass ended in a second.

Having said that, I would love to take it out for a spin.  :)

Hey, Very NICE job there Dan! 8) ;) Wouldn't bother ME to be seen on it either! I'd be PROUD! Other than "Ownership" (To Me ;D), bout the only thing that I MIGHT think of changing, would be to a painted front fender and THAT'S just ME mind you. Looks like it should be a really nice runner that you done up there. I know it's a Yamaha but, still good to see THEM fixed up and on the road too! ;) Take care have have Many miles of cruising! :)

I've got a suggestion.  You don't want to be seen riding round on that rickety old thing ::)   Bring it round my way and I'll do you a favour and take it off your hand ;D

Seriously though, real nice work Dan 8)  I would tend to agree with bill about the front fender, but that's entirely down to personal taste ;)

PS:  I've seen those tail-lights before S-Dog, they do stand out a lot more than shows on that photo :)

swweeeeeeeeeeeeet!  love them 650's.  have an original '75 with factory accessory mags (pentagram style) and hope to get that caf'd out soon (my 550 is nice but needs to be faster; a 650 will haul my fat ass much better!).

You know, you guys are right...  The bike always looked "unbalanced" to me, and now I think the front fender is why.  There's not enough chrome on the back end to support all the chrome on the front end.

So what color do you guys think?  The front fender on my xs850 is rattlecan matte black and looks pretty decent...

Instead of dulling down the front end to compensate for the lack of chrome in the rear, I would accent the dark motor and ass end with more chrome. Great job overall and a good standout color on the tank. Maybe match the black tail with the same color of blue?

It's actually a bicycle horn  ;D

I saw it online and thought it would be perfect for the japanese cafe racer!

Of course my other option is to just put a fork brace on it and completely remove the front fender...  ;D

What kinda true cafe racer ever sacrificed weight for comfort, anyway?

Stupid stupid me passed on the chance to pick up 2 universal fork braces for $5 apiece at the Barber swap meet.  I guess I'll just have to figure something out myself...

sweet ride... i like

one thing though,  you dont have a license plate light (witch will get you pulled over and ticketed)
and you dont have a tail light that i see , unless you have one of those fancy modules that makes you signals the brake light

other than that, i'd rock the hell out of that ,looks awesome

You're right spikey, I don't have a license plate light (though I've never had one before and not had a problem...)  I'll wait until I get pulled over to see if I really need one.

The LEDs in the frame are dual intensity tail/brake lights.  And they are daylight-visible (though the picture doesn't do them justice... but the red in the pictures are the tail light intensity, not the brake light intensity).

You know, I think the front fender idea would work & I'm also liking what Daniel (dg) was saying about the color. 8) Of course, it's your decision and a fork brace, without a front fender could work too.

I would go with a bigger tail light, maybe some sort of led setup the wraps the tail instead of a mount though.  The fender thing makes sense but maybe also drop the front end an inch or 2. The back looks good the front looks like it is reaching for the sky.  Otherwise it is very nice and looks done very well. But then I am cafe stupid! ;D

Definitely a black fender or lose the fender and run a fork brace.  Looks great.  What finish technique did you use on the engine?

I don't have any clue...  The bike came to me with the heart of darkness already applied.

I just rattlecanned semi-gloss black engine paint (one coat on the engine, 3 coats on the frame) to cover up the rust and scratches, and viola!  It's purty!   ;D

But then I am cafe stupid! ;D

Nice job Dan.

Around here (vermont) you would get stopped for:
no fender/ inadequate fender,
improper seat to handlebar height,
loud pipes (not being on a Harley, it must be too loud),
minimum tail light footprint not met,
"...registration says black, but YOUR registration says blue, buddy..."
footprint of rear viwe mirror too small...
on and on and on.... ???

but overall I like.

peace,
michel

Just an idle suggestion here but what you could do is get ahold of the same Tail/stop/turn lights that the Harley Nightsters use and solve the light issue. (this is the only time i will suggest such a thing on a non harley but i figured it would work best for his application)

Other then that it looks great man!

FYI the midnite specials had black engines from yami.  Yhays one thing I liked about them but not the gold BS.
