so,after almost 1000 miles since the top end.Sad to say I have an oil weep at the head gasket.Damn.It was my first build so at least it runs, right?Thing is,it runs great, great compression all around,I revved it high on sunday, and rode it a lil harder and I noticed when I take off from a stop I see smoke in my rear view.Sh*t!Has to be carb issue right?Valves?Anyone?I know its not rings because they are new and compression is good.

My first thought is a valve stem seal....making it smoke.  maybe as you accelerate you don't notice the smoke as much cause you're moving. (there's very little leakage)...or read my post Below about a re-torque!?
OR..you may be right on the carbs...she could be dumping more gas than she needs at idle ...and when you goose her to go, smoke is the product.

It'd be a little easier to tell if I could see n' smell it! ahah

I have always wanted to build a motor.I have learned a lot but I regret it.There was nothing wrong with my bike other than a lil oil weeping. Now I got smoke and oil weeping.I am almost ready to throw in the towel and sell it.With a full time job and a 4 yr old,I have no time to deal with it,Or very lil time.I even put on the frame kit and everything.

I say just step away from it for a week or two, maybe a little longer. I've never opened a motor but I can imagine the frustration of having it not come out quite right after all the effort.

If you sell it you'll regret it eventually.

Best of luck

Like Laser said...take a break from it...ride it as is as long as it's not that bad (It may not even be oil!?...It was just a guess on my part...hard to tell without seeing it myself)  And come back to it in a bit...  do some easy quick checks first...Pull the plugs and look for one cylinder that is either WET or full of black buildup....if there's one that sticks out a lot...

Actually...It makes sense that if you're getting some "oil weep" at the head.... the oil could also be weeping the other way "into" a cylinder...causing the burn & smoke.    In that case...with the frame kit installed...It's just a matter of re-torquing the head bolts!  Could be an easy fix.

If that's not the case...check to see if a carb jet backed out on its own...and is giving one cyl. more juice at idle  (although...I think it would run noticably rougher?)

I'm sure there are guys on here that can give much better advice than me.

Good luck!

I held a piece of paper behind the exhaust and lo and behold it was spattered, but I smelled it and couldnt tell if it was more gas than oil.I also changed my oil for the first time after the build and there was gas in it as it was pretty thin.I will ride it for a while fluctuating my rpm range drastically this time and see what happens. If the rings didnt seat properly, what do I do?Rehone?
