I got my 77' 750, and my 79' cm400a for free(friend at work), and traded a chainfall on CL for my 81' kz550.
Purchased my 92' secaII from CL for $900, traded a wood lathe on CL for my 76' cb550,
and the best deal of all...my 05' Yammie V-star was given to me by my father, after he retired and moved down south, has less than 2500 miles on it.....

Got a 77 cb550 for 100 + shipping off of CL no papers, now parting it out after about another 200 in parts to add to it.  Now working on a 78 kz650 that cost 200 needing a carb rebuild, tires, and some cosmetic attention.

1971 CB750K:  $250.00 in 2004

1976 CB550K:  $400.00 in 2006

1976 CB360T:  $200.00 in 2006

1979 KZ1000:  $250.00 in 2007

Don't ask how much I've spent on them since then, though, because that's a number I never, ever want to know. :o ;D

My first 750 was a 1975 with 3000 miles on it bought in late '77 for $100. Guy rode from phoenix AZ to SF and laid it down, got scared and sold it off. Only serious damage was a small hole in the alternator cover that dribbled oil, though the fairing and saddle bags were toast. Picked up a headlight bucket, JB welded to dribble, and put thousands of miles on her.

My current rider (k4)  I bought for $300 a few years ago (96?) and rode home, the 74 parts bike I bought for $125, the automatic (wife's rider) was $100, and the 76 F (parts) was another $100. All of them runners, the 74 parts bike is a snortin mean runner, but smokes so may re-ring it and swap motors on mine.

Ken.

My current project my wife paid WAY TOO MUCH FOR ($2300), but what does she know, and it was my 40th birthday present.
Last CB 750 I had I got paid to take away when my then girlfriends neighbor passed away, and after that while I was on the road with the circus I got a 76 CB 550 in a shop upstate NY for $1200 that had less then 4k on the odo and looked like it rolled off the showroom. Looks like my NEXT project bike/ parts donor might cost me around 4-500 bucks for a rusty but strong running 1978 CB750k with a Vetter fairing, dopey sissy bar and king/queen seat, hard saddlebags, and a Kerker exhaust if the kook who owns it gives in before I give up with him.

I paid $200 for the bike which was sitting in a friends garage for 11 years.  Spent 10 times that or more bringing it to what it is today and I'm still not finished.  If the wife ever found out she'd flip!   ;D

My first bike $300 a running cb400t.

Second bike(s)
100.00 for a '79cb650 w/title stripped of almost everything but a rolling chassis, and 60.00 for a COMPLETE '79cb650 parts bike, no title.

100.00 for a '81cb650c.
Running(after a hours worth of work), with title.

Have poured about 800-900 into the '79, and nothing so far into the '81cb650c.

My current project, a 1978 CB750 F3 was $400! And that included a Vetter fairing that I sold for $50!
Now the amount I am paying for the project is around $1200 right now and counting...

In Sept. 2007 I paid $425 for a 76 CB550F that "was running fine" but had been sitting for over a year. I had to push it home 2 miles! New battery, cleaned up the carbs, new gas and it fired right up.

Of course, since then, I have spent slightly more than that on parts, paint, tires, etc.

For "project bikes" it's not what you spend on the bike that matters, it's everything you spend AFTER you buy it...sometimes I wish I didn't keep track!

Yesterday I sold the CB500 I bought a couple of years ago. After a lot of parts purchased and money paid to the mechanic - for tasks I am yet unable to do - it was nearly complete.

I choose not to focus on what all I spent on it after buyng it. I am telling myself I broke even.  ;D

Now with some of these lessons learned, I am concentrating on the '78 750K8.

I'd been looking for a cheap project for my first bike for a while - bid on a couple, was an hour too late on a couple others, then I found a project '71 CB500 on ebay.  The seller had a CB350 Four also he had up at the same time.  I didn't get the CB500 but 10 minutes later I did get the CB350 for $77.  About a week later I rented a uhaul trailer for $16 for one day (a steal in my opinion) and the seller told me the guy never got back to him about the CB500 - so it was mine for $75 if I wanted he (heck yeah!)  So I picked up BOTH bikes, got a thumbs up from a lady in an SUV 10 minutes later and hauled them home.  Sold the CB350 to a co-worker at cost as he'd been following along and said he'd take whichever one I didn't want.  He's got his all torn down and I haven't seen it in a couple of months.
Mine mostly needed a carb rebuild to get it running.  Still needs front brake master rebuilt, chain and tires, but otherwise has been a fairly simple project (so far.)   ;D  oh, and it has 7900 miles on the odometer.

Have since picked up an '82 Suzuki GS450GA (semi-automatic shaft-drive) to try to get running for my down on his luck brother in law.  Nothing like two motorcycle projects at once!

My first "project" bike is a 1971 Candy Red CB750 I bought new in Sept. '71 (yes, I'm that old) for $1625. I kept it in good shape but it needed to be freshened up so I took it down to the frame and polished and played. It has it's patina intact. All red paint with the exception of the right fork ear is original. No re-chroming needed.
Second project is another '71 nearing completion. Another candy red but much harder project. I started with a free frame, a box of K stuff from an F fan for $200 and a seized 1970 motor for $100. I don't want to add up what I have into this one. New seat, fenders, rims, spokes, pipes, polishing, rebuilt motor, paint, etc., untold hours of scrouging, paying too much ebay, and tons of help from you guys. Pics will be posted soon.
On deck is a candy blue-green 1970 (12/69 build date) CB750 I had given to me but it cost nearly $200 to get it home. I think the "free" stuff is the most expensive to deal with. Thsi one will be a long term one I think.
The sound of 12 pipes should be quite pleasant!
Cheers,
Cliff.

I spent no money on my 550. I traded a beat up 89 GS500E for it, which my friend never rode,   since then I've really only put an exhaust on it, new tires, and soon a chain.

I've got a CL200 (only made one year) that was my first bike.  $200.  Got it at 11, hit a tree with it at 13 and I'm still looking for a new frontend   ::)

The K0 cost $1k.

And I was just GIVEN (absolutely free 'o' charge) an early K1 (engine 46XXX) with a perfect set of HM300s on it and a clear title  ;D ;D ;D

I got my 76 cb550 off a neighbor last year for $300. It didn't run but all it took was some fresh gas, new battery and new condensers. I've since put a lot of time and money in the bike but it's all been worth it.

I think I hate this thread. I paid $700 for a 1975 cb750K that was the biggest turd ever. I bought it because a friend of mine told me the guy was reputable. Almost nothing worked. What was worse was that just about everything that was important was zip-tied down. He also just the springs on the shocks so short that they were completely useless. He put a 6+ set of front forks on the thing without any other adjustments. oh yeah, the guy bolted a mustang solo seat right to the frame. Never trust your friends; do your own work/investigation. Lesson learned.

The bike in my avatar cost $500 just over 6 years ago. It was a runner and had a title.
To date, including the initial purchase It stands us at arround $24,000.
The origional stock motor was still running well after 5 years abuse on the drag strips of the UK.

My first bike, a '72 CB750 cost me $100, a set of Warn hubs that I beat the piss out of on my F-150, and installing rear brake shoes on a full size Blazer. Bike didn't run, but all it needed was gas tank cleanead out and carbs cleaned out. Rode all summer last year.

This one is a '71 CB750. It's got hella motor work done to it. No idea exactly what it's got, but it's faster than my buddys Shadow 1100. Pulls to well over 11,000 RPM, doesn't start making max power to about 8,000 when it takes off like mad. Overall pretty good condition. Needs odds and ends. Paid $700.

Yo Cadunkle,

Those are some crazy ass pipes.  I think I likem  ;D

This thread is incredibly enlightening.  I'm understanding now that many in our flock (easy now Terry) are attracted to these bikes because you can get into a project bike pretty cheaply, and ride the hell out of it while you continue to make it more badass.

Badass can be bobber, cafe, true track resto-racer, or restored.

I had no idea there were this many people out there like me   ;D

I paid $100 for my K8. It had been last on the road in 1979. The owners friend was t boned at an intersection in fornt of him. He parked the bike in his basement garage and it sat until we winched it out in 1999. Every fluid had congealed but the motor was free with no rust in the cylinders(using a fiber optic scope). I was going to part it out but something about it made we want to make it run again. The caliper was so frozen my friend just just shipped to to his rebuilder in  Cali to be be bored and rebuilt with a SS piston. The tank went to a radiaitor shop and a half tank of varnish was removed. The carbs were frozen solid so off it went to a old guy who ultrasounded it. While this was going on, I spent weeks cleaning oxide off all of the Aluminum. My wife calls it the Red Whore, I call it my bike since I brought it back to life. I hate it and I love it and I sold the last of my other bikes last spring.  I guess put around $1,000 into it over the years.
