cb550 owners (part removal)
« on: February 11, 2008, 02:04:19 PM »
How do you guys remove your spark plugs and oil pan.  These are things that need to be done every now and then but I've found that you have to remove other stuff to get to these two items.

spark plug 3 = removal of tach cable or gas tank

oil pan = removal of 3 exhaust pipe.

anyone have a different/easier method?

Heck, I can't even find a plug socket that will fit in the hole yet. :( But I do have a nice collection of new spark plug sockets now.

EDIT: 6 point 5/8 spark plug socket

The 5/8 socket is what I have, and it's too big to slide and engage the plug. I recall there is a special socket (sheet metal, formed) in my CBR tool kit (dont' have the bike anymore). Too bad I don't have on for this guy.

Anyway, appologies for jump the thread.

Pick up a tool kit for your bike.  The spark plug wrench that comes with it is made for the job.  I don't have to remove anything.  Then slip a piece of gas line over the end to use as a handle to reinstall.  You'll never accidentally cross thread it that way(maybe, but you'd have to try really hard).

Oil pan?  You mean the filter housing?  That should be able to maneuvered out without taking off the exhaust.

The plugs take an 18mm socket. I got mine from MAC.

I would probably need to pull the header to get the pan off.

Happy trails.

didn't think about it but they would use a metric socket wouldn't they...well mine fits tight so I'm not gonna worry about it too much...when I get a little extra cash I'll invest in the tool kit.
