It looks like two sets of beveled gears (make 2 90deg power transfers).  Others use a simple setup involving a couple of spur gears which seems easier and has a good final gearing reduction.

I assumed it was some kinda bevel gear also, is that what it is Outlaw?

Portal axles use bevel gears in them but they have offset hubs like whats shown under those trucks. Basically the main axle housing is up above the wheels like that for ground clearance.
