Why?  Well, heel and toe driving is used to match revs (or keep them up) when downshifting and driving through corners.  If you do it right, you shoot out of those corners without wiping much speed.  When I had my GTI I entered a local closed lot ralley.  My first attempt though the course was just BAD.  I wiped speed out of every corner.  Then I began to use the heel and toe method and my second pass was much better.  By days end I was using toe and heel and sliding into a few corners.  My tires were toast and my clutch wasn't very happy.

That was fun to watch! For several years I rented Renault Lagunas while in europe. They were good handling cars with decent get up and go, won the european sedan class a few times I think. Anyway, one way you can get the rear end out on front wheel drive cars is with the hand brake as you boot the car and cut the wheel, instant oversteer, dump the hand brake, cut the wheel the other way and you're power sliding, keep the gas pedal down and use heel and toe to control the slide with the brake pedal lightly. I've been working on this manoever over the years on rural dirt and gravel roads and had alot of fun, although now I usually rent a work truck while there, I hope no one from Avis is monitoring this thread!

I always found it easier to toe the gas and heel the brake.  I guess it depends on the layout in the car.  My first car was a '68 British Ford Cortina GT, somewhat rare here in the States.  And while I never officially raced it, I certainly drove it like I was racing.

love that stuff
used to have a little dirt road fun in my escort and thought i wasnt to bad at it, then SWMBO bought me a ticket to a one day rally school and the instructor gave me a few pointers on the heel and toe, took 12.5 seconds of my lap time on the long track at the rally school, and about 6 months off the clutch lol
the escorts perfect for that sort of thing as the pedals are pretty close together to start with
cheers

True Mike, but at $900 a pop for 4 new 18" tires and about $600 for a clutch my Ralley driving days are over. Unless... you would like to sponser me. ;D

That's the way I drive the beemer, the fiat I roll my foot on as pictured.
I did have to set the pedals in the fiat to do it this way.

Art, you shouldn't be that hard on your clutch if your rev matching correctly.  ;D ;D ;D ;D
