CB750F tank needed to finish the Sumbich project
« on: March 03, 2008, 08:57:10 AM »
I know this isn't the spot to post this, but after buying two tanks from ebay that turned out to be duds and having little luck posting in the "parts wanted" section these past months I thought I'd post my plea in a higher traffic area.

Looking to buy a 75-78 750F supersport tank to ship to Terry In Australia for finishing and paint. Just need one that isn't filled with rust or sealant. Small dents or bad paint are not an issue, just need good metal. Any help or pointers towards a good tank are appreciated.

Thanks for spottin' that one Rxmann. Grass Valley is just a few hours ride from here, but my "spider sense" got all tingly when I saw that auction. Dead motor bike that's been sitting outside for who knows how long with no shots of the inside of the tank. The price is at  $150 and I've already lost that much gambling on Ebay tanks that looked better than that in pictures.

Hoping a fellow SOHC'er can help me reduce the risk. Not looking for perfect but willing to pay for something good.

Not to highjack your thread here, but I am in the same boat as you are, can't seem to find one with decent metal, which brings me to my point.  What is the epoxy crap inside that tank of yours?  I ask as I may be interested in buying it off you as I will be cutting in knee inserts and may be able to clean it out when it is opened up.  Let me know, thanks

I surely wouldn't bid on a used tank unless they would show pictures of the inside and bottom seams. Did you see the NOS tank that was listed last week or so and had a Buy It Now of $600? Not sure if anyone bid so it may surface again for a lower price. I'll keep you informed when I see something. There was a bunch of different fancy tach plugs that ended yesterday too.

Don't remember if I took the time to thank ya proper for leading me to those tach plugs, Jerry. The one you pointed to from dgfischer turned out to be a good one indeed. Nice fit and a 0-ring to keep a good seal. Looking for a decent and somewhat inexpensive electric speedo so I can use my second one to plug the speedo drive :)

If you follow the link in my first post you can see a pic of the current tank. Knee dents have been added and it wasn't until the gas lid was cut out to weld in a modern flush mount cap that the true nature of the insides were discovered. Once the rest of the epoxy cut loose the tank started leaking from the seams. Pooh!

Would it be easier if a tank was available in Australia, and then get it sent to Terry for painting - would save a fair bit on postage too...

I have an idea there is one available locally - will check on condition and let you know... though it may cost terry one of his pet sheep......

Terry has this fugly psychedelic painted tank on his bike that I'm sure he'd be glad to part with  ;)  ;D but on the other hand I believe it is a K tank. The man just has no taste (except in whiskey). I wonder if he received his Maker's Mark Ambassador kit yet?

That would be the best option in a perfect world, 750goes ;) :) Last tank actually came from Ebay down under, which saved quite a bit on the shipping costs. Too bad it was filled with sludge :'( Any help you can give in locating a Superport tank over there that can hold gas well is greatly appreciated. I'll even throw in some genuine Hollywood/California silicon implants to help spice up Terry's pet sheep ;D

what color do you need? I have a NOS 1975 Orange Flake tank, it was a 1980s part (probably one of the last made by honda) so the color is a smidge off. I was thinking about having a tail painted to match but if it is the proper color you need then make me an offer.

if you are just going to bash it then forget it.

Thanks for the offer Geeto :)  I'm guessing from the Orange Flake paint that you have a K model tank which wouldn't fit the Supersport. And even if it did I wouldn't have the heart to bash a pristine tank with period correct paint ;)

No it is a 1975 F sunrise flake metallic. Kind of a rare color for F's because they fade really badly, but it is indeed an F tank and not a K tank (K tanks were orange in 1973). I don't know if the F was sold in sunrise flake outside the US and japan because those seem to be the only places I see them.

A friend of mine just moved to the Caribbean and dumped a bunch of F stuff off with me about a month ago. I think there was a tank in there but I will have to look to see if I still have it. I am pretty sure it is solid but it had some flash rust on the inside and he was going to put a liner in it. If I still have it I'll snap a photo and see if you still want it - otherwise it goes on the spares shelf.

Can't thank ya enough for checking into that for me. Anything I can send/do to return the favor is OK by me :)

Wow, all the more reason to hang on to that one. I've only seen the 75 F's in blue and maybe black here in the states.

If you've got a tank on the shelf with some flash rust(they all seem to get that after a short bit of sitting) that would work fine, as long as it's not rusting through the bottom welds. Usually the paint gets a little blistered along the bottom edges if gas or lacquer thinner is left to sit in the tank for a day or two, at least that's my "quick and dirty" way of checking.

Really appreciate you guys looking. It's been months waiting for Aussie outdoor painting season to come around and now the time is getting short after wasting some of it on bad tanks.

Yeah, that tank looks ok Jerry, thanks for that mate, it'd be a waste on a fugly ol' F0 anyways, so send it over, I've got the big hammer waiting! ;D (and I got my MM Ambassador pack, thanks mate!)

But seriously, like Sean says, a tank with a  little surface rust inside is fine, Sean sent me a POR15 kit last year so I'll coat it once it's been modified, (just in case there's a pin hole in one of my welds) but the tank that Sean just bought that's full of rust has a nice thick layer of epoxy that I can't assume that I'll be able to remove, and I don't feel confidant that the POR15 will cover properly.

Come on guys, this is a good cause, so give until it hurts! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Bad news - I found the tank upstairs at the wreckers after a half hour search (he has about 300 tanks - all various shapes sizes models etc...)
When I took it out into the sunlight - it had bubbles through the paint about half way up the side of the tank... I gave it a quick shake - it felt heavy  - and it rustled quite a bit, opened it up - and it was screwed badly.. I even quite easily poked my finger though one side of the tank...
so it was consigned to the scrap heap straight away - I will save the cap and the little spring clip only - no petcock - the bottom seams were fine - but all around about half way up it was toast - it was an F2 tank.

Another one lost to lack of care.....

I'll keep my eyes open anyway..

Thanks again for looking :) The tanks I have looked at in my area are much the same. I think that the cafe boom over the past few years has made usable spares a bit harder to come by than in years past :'(

If you can wait until the weekend, I can get over to the storage unit where most of My F stuff is.

That would be great, Geeto. I'll keep following any leads I can come across in the meantime and will post here if something pops up. I can wait as long as it takes. I have to ;) :)

If you find an extra tank for a 77-78 F, I'd like a good one, too.  The swiss one I have, isn't making me very happy.  Once I got all the rust out of it, it revealed its ambition to become cheese. ::)

I think it goes something like "fill tank with gasoline, stick one finger in the tank while using the free hand to stab a fork in a open light socket". Or was it "fill tank with butane..........."? I can never get that part straight. Anyway, give it a shot Terry and let me know how it goes ;) ;D ;D
