Surprised it's not on ebay. Actually, he'd probably get more for the Von Dutch tins by themselves  - kinda irrelevant what bike they're on.

More power to him but for $15k I would like to see a perfect set of HM300s on it.

I totally agree, sell the tins and restore the bike to original.

I hope you guys are only kidding, especially about the 300,s helping the value ???

I know a guy that just ran his bike thru a major auction recently, it was painted by Von Dutch  who hand painted the decals on it. He wondered sometimes wether he should have repainted it..

It ran thru the auction for  about 20 K more than it should have brought. I wouldnt retouch or repaint anything painted by him, Nor would I be surprise if someone buys this one and turns a good profit..

Thats exactly what I would do.  Unload those ugly ass tins on eBay, use part of the money to buy stock ones, keep the change, and the bike.

He should, and throw in the ape hangers as a bonus.

You guys sound like you would take a Hailwood Six  (if it was non factory paint) and repaint or part it out cuz it is no longer the way it left the factory..

It's not the paint, it's:

"Could need new battery, new tires (good thread but cracks on the side walls) and should be getting close to new front brake pads."

And:

"this bike is the first bike in production to have a front disc brake, a 4-cylinder engine and a dual cable throttle."

Followed by:

"40-50K is logical knowing his work. I will take 15k or best offer now in cash as I need the money. Don't expect any super deals though"

Also those handlebars are teh stupid - but that's just me.

I have to agree with you greg. This guy is pretty sure of himself especially given the ugly color of paint!

To the right buer it could be pure gold. To me though it's a rather ugly bike and needs a new paint job.
Bright side, he does have the manual!

I see nothing special about the pipes so what would be wrong with putting 300s back on if value is your only concern?

I originally posted this with a bit of sarcasm intended, and was oblivious to the fact that old VonDutch painting/striping brought up the value to that degree.....
Granted, what a great piece of Von Dutch history, but I was a bit surprised that with a bike that "is not show quality", he would be asking this much.

Unrestored does not mean low value. Look at a sandcast, or the unrestored 36 EL that just brought 60 K.

The value is often  simply because it is one of very few original unmolested examples in existance.

The Scott motorcyle that the guy sold was probably worth 20- 30 K  as an original resto, but with the Von Dutch  work on it brought aroud 45 or 50 K.

Very good point; and well taken.

For any appreciators of motorcycle/hot-rod/car/truck history, regardless of how much this guy is asking, it is nice to see 'unmolested' moto-art when it comes out of the woodwork; either for sale or in a show.

I think it is the whole attitude the guy has about it. If not for that, might be easier to swallow.

It's really a shame that you can't say what you think, without getting run thru the ringer because you don't agree with something, someone thinks is art. To me it's a joke to think someone would pay that kind of money for that, just because of a paint job. And not even a good design IMO.

von dutch had crappy taste.   :P   or he was too greedy to tell his customers they did.

i had a refrigerator once that looked very similar to that.  it has long since been replaced.

eye of the beholder, and all that. once painted by an artist, it's art -- you just can't apply the usual CB750 valuation to it. it's not worth $50K to you, and it's not worth $50K to me, but Jeff Koons has his goons build chromed inflatable sculptures and his #$%* sells for $50M. so somebody out there will decide they really really want original Von Dutch work, and this will be worth it to them.

If I have 50K and I want to buy art, I would buy a regular CB750 and buy a Picasso sketch with the remaining dough.
