10W40 vs 20W50

Can we damage a motor using thicker oil like 20W50, let say around 45-50 degree F?
I read Hondaman commentary that 1hp is lost using 20W50 oil.
Any opinion?

I've used 20W50 at 45 degrees without problems. Colder than that gives the starter a tough time. I live South Shore Montreal & ride down to about 28 degrees in the mornings as long as the roads are not frosty. I need 10W40 or even 5W30 Rotella synthetic for those mornings.
