Game three just ended 3-2 Pittsburgh. :'(

Time to drag out a good luck charm, maybe. It's my grandson sitting in the Grand Goblet after the Wings last cup win.

Thanks. Of course he's a bit bigger now. Actually, the pic was taken by one of the "white glove" guys who is supposed to be guarding the cup. ::) Mark, my son-in-law, struck up a conversation with him. Mark was the asst. soccer coach at Notre Dame for a couple of seasons and apparently that was the connection. Mark asked if it would be possible to get a picture of Liam in the cup. At first the guy had this incredulous look, then glanced around and said, "OK, as long as we are quick about it." It is one for the little guy's scrap book for sure.

Good pic Bob! Although I gotta say that even if his diaper was full there have been far worse things done to the cup!!! I have seen some of the boys in action when that thing makes the rounds with the winning players in the summer. 75% of the league have cottages up in the Kawartha's and those buys drink alot of Canadian beer and act kinda crazy when that thing is around.

As for the Penguins and post season play in particular....BAH HUM BUG! Who needs Hockey in April May and June...of course I am a Leaf fan!

The picture's a gem, Bob. I can't say that there are any of *my* baby pictures that I (or anyone for that matter) would want to keep.

GO FLAMES  :'(

Allow me to correct your spelling/grammar,  I KNOW you meant GOON FLAMES.

Sharks fan here.  Flames injured ALL the top Sharks players, so they couldn't play Hockey anymore.  To the Flames credit, they knew their skill was injuring rather than actual Hockey, and they played that hand.  I'm madder at the NHL for allowing it.  I guess that's a concession to the Canadian fans/teams that can't attract players skilled in Hockey?

I don't think the Sharks could have beaten Detroit.  But, if they had been able to play.  They would've beaten Dallas in 5.

Penguins?  Well, half their roster is more interested in injuring than playing hockey, though they do have some skilled players.

I'm not usually a Detroit fan.  But, I gotta go with Detroit for the cup.  A lot less facial jabs and sticks across the back of the neck.  If the refs would actually call by the rules, the Pens would play the entire game short handed.  Detroit has more players focused on Hockey and are pretty good at it.

I hope the Sharks new coach isn't a goon advocate.  ::)

Tough is one thing. Intent to injure is quite another.  Let 'em fight and spar off one on one while halting play.   But, don't let 'em injure during game play.

My devalued $0.02.

I've not seen proof there was or is intent to injure, but even if it does exist, it is a symptom of our society.  We demand blood. Notice the way our popular entertainment is going - how many killings, beatings, and rapes will we see in evenings TV?  Look at the high ratings of 'reality' shows that have the participants degrade and humiliate themselves for money.  Exteme fights?  What other society on the planet creates video games for their children to 'kill' endlessly for enjoyment?  If there wasn't a market for this, it would not be mainstream.  We in the twilight of our culture and professional hockey players are merely the gladiators of our time.
BTW, over half the NHL players are Canadian, maybe the Sharks should sign more than 12  so as to be competitive.  :)

Upperlake...while I agree with you about the content of the league and percentage of Canadians I gotta disagree with you in regards to society impacting our intent to injure.

A couple of quick points....first of all we don't produce the games for our kids to play with...the Japanese produse those games primarily. Secondly Hockey was WAY more violent back in the day. Anybody seen a good bench clearing brawl lately? Or better yet a stick fight?? Man there were some crazy fights back in the day....

And don't even get me started on intent to injure....But I digress....

I've not seen proof there was or is intent to injure,
Right, the Sarrich hit on Marleau was just incidental contact, I suppose?
And later in the series, a Calgary goon took out Brian Cambell's knee so he could no longer out-skate nearly anyone on Calgary's team.

but even if it does exist, it is a symptom of our society.  We demand blood.
Would that be Canadian society?  Or, world wide society?  (sorry, cheap shot...)  But, I do notice a distinct tendency toward skill over punishment by the European or Russian players over the Canadian players.

We in the twilight of our culture and professional hockey players are merely the gladiators of our time.
Today's technology has the means to fulfill base desires through fantasy, which many people can differentiate from reality.
The whole gladiator thing was devised as a distraction to the disenfranchised populace, away from political and governmental focus, and emphasized the individual as meaningless, thereby raising the status of the emperor, senate, upper class, etc. and feeding the baser instincts of the human condition much like modern marketing does.  I don't like either.  And, reject both.  I watch and enjoy Hockey to see the individual achievements within the team sport.
How successful do you think Gretzky would have been had the opposing team took out his knee during the early rounds of the playoffs?
Ron Wilson's mistake was to not let Shelby be the Semenko of the old days, I suppose.  So, if Shelby had taken out Iginla's, Phanuff's, or Nolan's knee, you'd be ok with that, eh?  I wouldn't.

BTW, over half the NHL players are Canadian, maybe the Sharks should sign more than 12  so as to be competitive.  :)
If the Sharks aren't competitive, what does that make Calgary-out-in-the-first-round-7th-for-the-season?

Most of the class players left in the Calgary organization are those who were former Sharks. ::)

Old time Hockey is differentiated from modern hockey by the higher level of skill and conditioning absent in "old time Hockey".  It is far more popular because of the higher level of skill required of today's game.  If you remove the skill players and replace them with goons, it will once again be as popular as it was in the old time hockey days of six teams and near obscurity with the populace at large.
The NHL already began to make rule changes that allowed the skill players to show their stuff, negating the clutch and grab style of "old time hockey".  Why they don't strictly enforce those same rules during the playoffs, and allow the skill players to survive, is beyond me.

If beating someone till they bleed is really preferred over a skating/passing/scoring-finesse sequence, then I'm done with Hockey.

 Absolutely, that's one difference.

Me too, the athletic skills by the flashy players are at the level of any sport in the world.  But The Game is more than that. A winning team has players for specific jobs, and the alchemy creates a sum greater than the parts. Technical brilliance is only one element and the reason a small country like Canada consistently develops the best players in the world and dominates world championships as a nation is because we have passion.

Of course, there are fewer natural goal scorers in any country and those rare talents are the Europeans and Russians that are drafted to play here. Their grinders stay home because there is a large pool of 'punishment' grinders here.  Its unreasonable to expect two close knit groups of competitive men of different personalities, sizes and skills to play an adrenalin filled high-speed instinctual contact sport in back to back games, with high stakes in front of huge crowds and not  have personal and inter-team rivalries. Hockey without passion would be a sterile clinical event.  As you know, tough play, retaliation and payback don't often result in injuries.

Consider - at the end of this season, the top ten NHL goal scorers included 4 Canadians, as well as 4 Russians and 2 Swedes.  Of the top 5 goalies, 3 were Canadian, and 1 Russian and 1 Czech.  No Americans - sorry ;D

I've been a Hockey fan since the 60's when I could hear the Blackhawks play the other 5 teams on the radio and see them occasionally on TV.  The radio play-by-play made the finesse and skill, such as it was, vivid.  The nasty underhanded beat 'em up crap that went on was minimally reported, as I recall.  I still like the Blackhawks, btw.  But, their record is sorta like the Cubs. :(  :'(  And, I can't go see games 2500 miles away.

Technical brilliance is only one element and the reason a small country like Canada consistently develops the best players in the world and dominates world championships as a nation is because we have passion.
Hmm, I thought it was because every backyard in Canada turned into an ice rink 6 months out of the year and there was nothing else for kids and teens to do.  ???

Well, not during the regular season.

Actually, they don't often result in reported injuries.  The poorer skilled teams only hope is "tough play".  As I said, I don't watch it for the tough play, I watch it for play-making skill prowess, which is why watching Gretzky in particular was so enjoyable.  If I wanted to watch heads getting thumped or people injured, I'd watch football, boxing, or extreme fighting, which I seldom do.

I played hockey with Canadians on the canal in Ottawa when I was a wee lad of 16.
I found I was better suited as a grinder, mostly because of the ice skating. (We didn't have
ice skate down south)
I could get going pretty fast but the stopping was the problem, so, I'd just take someone
out for the stop.  ;D ;D ;D

What Dave said though, when you get competitive fellows together things can get a
bit rough sometimes eh??
