« on: August 24, 2005, 02:20:13 PM »
A few of us have chatted in the past about engine paints & I said I'd pop up a pic when I got my motor completed.

Here it is, VHT high temp  SP127 Universal Aluminium

Good job Andy,just beware of fuel sytem cleaner type additives, one leaking carb (stuck needle and seat) ate my VHT satin black engine enamel a year after I'd painted my cases! Cheers, Terry. :'(
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Andy, that looks sweet!   ;D  Your CR project is coming along nicely.  BTW, I've found a new way to open and close gauges for refurbishing the faces.   ;)

Here's a pic of mine, same paint.  That stuff is a near dead-on match for Honda AND Kawasaki flat silver:

Great looking paint job!...  except for not looking "stock" I would think about re-doing mine.
I just did the 4-to-1 header and the top-end on my 650 Nighthawk in flat black.
The only problem was that the colour did not seem consistent on the pipes.
It looked a bit grey in spots.  I know that I shook it up well.  :(
Regardless, it seems to be holding up well in both applications.

I will redo the header and paint the lower-end this winter.

Hey Guys, I'm new to motorcycling. My Dad has had a 1981 CB650C for a few years now and I'm going to be helping him restore it and hopefully inherit it. I was wondering about painting the engine. How far do you have to tear it down? I'm going to replace the head gasket and thought about painting the engine.

Thanks,
Paul

I've fitted a modified set of MC rearsets to my frame. MC Enterprises of California made custom motorcycle accessories in the 1970's and these rearsets could be fitted to both the 750 four and the 500 four. I bought this kit on Ebay, and it came to me in its original packing - a faded L A Times newspaper from the 70's. The side plates should be held to the frame with metal clips bolted onto the frame tubes. The plates are rectangular. I shaped the plates to fit the angles of the frame tubing &, welded them to the frame rather than bolted onto clips. The pivot points were improved as well by machining pivots with closer tolerances - this has removed all play from the lever action.
They look a bit chunky, but do the job.

Good point. We mustn't think that a paint is completely bullet proof  ;D
{you'll get that joke, Terry !}

The preference is to strip all the way, get the cases cleaned really well. But you can probably do a fair job if you are careful, with the motor in one piece.

Andynzl,
How did you get that aluminum to be so clean and shiny or did it start that way?  BTW, regarding engine case paint I tried the duplicolor 1615 and it doesnt match - to my eye - will check out the Sp127 uni. aluminum...

that engine does look great.  I have used vht years ago on a v8 ford that I had build for a friend of a friend.  but it did not turn out that nice.  the only questions i have is how it will hold up to the repetive cleaning of road grime?  would you powerwash the engine or what?  continue the good work!
oh ya and thanks for the rear set pics.  gives me Ideas for my bike.

Great work on the piant. I bidded on a set of those rears last month and lost out at the last minute. Can you take a shot of the bike from a few feet back? I was curious how they would actually look together on the bike as a whole. Maybe next time I'll pony up more cash.

Thanks!

I guess in time, the addition and removal of grime will eventually get to the paint finish, just as the original finish on Japanese Bikes of this area were all made to look a bit crappy over time. I think I'd use a gently method than power washing.

I had the motor cases chemically cleaned in a motor shop.
Just in case of confusion - the shiny bits eg cam cover, clutch cover - were bead blasted then ceramic coating applied by HPC  http://www.hpcoatings.com/  The gearbox cover is hand polished, with a hi-temp clear applied {always experimenting!}
I've only used the VHT on crankcases, barrells, and head.

I finally found VHT at Autozone for $10 - the day after I used the Duplicolor 1606 on the oil filter housing. I don't care for the Duplicolor - way too shiny and bright. Your photos with VHT look terrific.

It did'nt last year, I cut the grass Christmas eve and again the second week in January.

I dont mind cutting the grass, it's just that you can't realy do it when it's wet :(.

I am off home in an hour, will see you next week end.

Did you use the same paint on the case as you did the fins?

Yes, head, barrells, crankcases, all the same.
