Is it a K1 or K2??
« on: May 30, 2008, 11:35:41 PM »
Just purchased a CB750 with sidecar. It is titled as a 1972. But on the fork tube, has a build date of 9/71.

The Frame VIN is CB750 1115948 and the engine is CB750E 1115378

I found this page that shows various CB750 years/colors:
http://www.spookytoms.com/CB750-PaintColors.html

On that, I see the 1971 bikes have a different tail light than the 1972 bikes. The one I bought has a tail light like shown on the 1971's

Also, the mufflers have a number HM341 stamped on them which I read somewhere here was on the 1972's whereas the 1971 would have had HM300 or something like that.

I really don't care what the title says, although it appears it may be wrong, but more concerned as I buying parts to bring the bike back to full glory that I get the right parts.

From what I have posted, would you say this bike a is 1971 (K1) or a 1972 (K2). Is it possible/normal for a bike to be a K1 yet titled as a 1972??

Confused in WV...  ???

Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

made in September 1971? that is a 1972 model. Usually The begin making the model years bike in about April or May of the year before. Something made in September of 1971 would probably not have hit a showroom until March of 1972. Of course you could always run the numbers against a chart on this site and confirm it.

Edit - I checked the numbers and it looks like it is part of the 1971 bikes. Who knows why they were making 1971 bikes as late as September, maybe they had a backlog of orders, or mfg problems but there it is. The late production and most likely later delivery may explain why it got registered as a 1972.

And, you can't always go by the parts on a SOHC - there bikes were so plentiful and like tinker toys back in the day - you hurt one part and you just went and bought another part regardless of year.

Near as I can tell the sidecar is an American Eagle Spirit from the same era. Bike runs good but both the bike and hack are in need of a lot of TLC and fresh paint. Got this mainly as a winter project but will put around on it some this season. The handlebars and funky seat gotta go first. Probably add comfort but I am looking for a more vintage look.

Still haven't decided for sure but more than likely will go with a stock seat and a low sissy bar. This seat seems very comfortable from what little time I spent on it, but to me, it just doesn't look right on the bike.

The flag pole has a rotating orange light on top. The previous owner was a bit more safety oriented than I am. It's coming off today.  ;D

K2 was when the headlight ears came in chrome and the headlight bucket in black, and idiot lights on the handlebar. Idiot lights on the instruments, headlight bucket and ears painted in the bike color, is K1 or K0.

That's a good-looking rig. A lower handlebar and stock seat and you will have a great setup. Well, brown is not my cup of tea but I would live with it.

Please resist the temptation to get some cash for the seat and burn it to ashes. Mr. Honda would be proud of you.....   ;D

I bought a 76 that had that same type seat on it. It is comfortable, but In my opinion it is butt ugly. First thing I did was throw that seat in the dumpster and install the original one I had got with my bike. Nice bike though and sidecar is coooooool.

Hmm.. Mine might be kind of a mutt then..  ;D The headlight ears are chrome. The headlight bucket is painted to match the bike, but that is irrelevant as the bike was repainted a looong time ago to match the sidecar with some custom pinstriping. Idiot lights are in the instruments.

Being so late in '71... would it be possible that used up remaining K1 stock while at same time using some of the newer K2 stock when they built them?

I am a total newbie to vintage bikes.

Well the guy I bought it from rode it. Engine sounds great and the short ride I took so far it seems very strong. Now either I have a lot to get used to with riding a hack or the set-up is off some because it seems very hard to steer to the right. But mostly it is cosmetic stuff that needs attention. Paint is old and didn't appear to be a great job when it was painted. Fiberglass on the hack is almost perfect with one crack that will need repaired. Paint is cracked a lot with a few rock nicks in the fiberglass. It will take a lot of elbow grease to look good again. One side cover on the bike is cracked and will need replaced. The seat and handlebars will have to come back to stock. Also, it looks to me like someone put a '76 or later fender on the front. A lot of the chrome at first glance seemed bad, but my son and I spent some time this morning with polish and was surprised how much of what we did so far is actually in great shape after a little polishing. The previous owner wasn't a detailing freak like me..  ;)

But as far as ridable the guy just put new brakes, clutch, tires and windscreens on it so after a thorough once (or twice) over for piece of mind, I think it is ridable now really.

I am a total newbie to vintage bikes.

Those instruments are K1, no doubt of that. K2 started the "dashboards" on the handlebars. Your engine and frame is K1, too. The pipes: well, they were originally HM300 style, but those rusted quickly, especially the #2 pipe when the drain hole plugged up with chain lube gunk. So, you may have the HM341 pipes by now, which came out on K2. You probably have the better-breathing, earlier-style airbox, which has a wider inlet vent across the back side than the K2 and later boxes had.

The headlight parts: since these got damaged every time a bike fell over, they were often replaced with whatever could be had quickly. They also rusted fast on the earlier bikes, and owner would come into our shop(s) and order the newer chromed ones to spruce up their bikes, so that's a poor indicator of vintage, too.

One thing you might look for on those K1 frames: there should be a small drain hole on the bottom edge of the frame, near the sidestand on the left and near the footpeg on the right. Some had holes in other points along that bottom run of the frame. But, some K1s did not have these holes, and the frames rusted internally, causing big problems. Look for your holes, especially if the bike's been painted, make sure they are open. If not there, drill a 3/32" hole in these locations, or you will get a rust-damaged frame from internal condensation.

Honda very quietly had their reps come around and tell us this in the shops, without publishing it, and we did find a number of K1s that needed (and got) these holes. I have seen rust-bent K1 frames in the boneyards, died from this problem, no doubt.  :(
