76 550k, Rocker shafts, tire question
« on: June 06, 2008, 09:41:44 AM »
To troubleshoot my griding sound upon engine braking (only after 4k+ revs), I was told to check the rocker shaft inspection holes. I pulled off the rocker arm shaft inspection access covers.  The RH (while sitting) came off perfectly fine, just 1 phillips head screw and pull.  The LH side was a #$%*.  I ended up stripping the screw (used pliers on a screwdriver, after all else failed).  I ended up drilling the head off and the cover came right off, woohoo! I discovered two problems: 1. The threads of the screw were stuck in the housing bracket and 2. I didn't discover what I had expected.  After lots of needle-nose work and curses, the threads came out.  As for the non-existent discovery... The attached pictures show the rocker shaft (#$%*ty cell phone pics in the dark).  As you can tell from the pics the shaft isn't wearing into the cam cover and there is no gap in there.  On pic shows an illusion of a gap on the front side, but its just the angle, see other pic.

So what could my grinding noise be?  The Left side showed oil leakage, the right side did not.  There seems to be no gaps.  Should I pickup some o-rings?  If so, where do I shove them?  I've searched the forum quite a bit, so forgive me.

Also (and I REALLY hate to bring this up) but what do people reccommend for tires.  I'm thinking about doing the Dunlop D404s.  And I'll probably do Front: 100/90-19, Rear: 110/90-18.  I'm having trouble finding a good price, any suggestions online?  I tired http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ but they only had 110/90-18 for the rear.  Will a 110/90-19 fit on the front?  Or should I spring for the Metzelers?

OIC.  Thanks.  I think the problem with searching is that I could read all day long and not find what I need.  Its an indicaiton of the massive wealth of knowledge on this site.

I just ordered the Dunlop D404s from www.tiresunlimited.com/default.htm (TwoTired).  Now for a proper DOT legal helmet (mine is M95!), chain, and sprockets.  And I'll be safely on the road.

Check with Dennis Kirk. I recently bought tires for my v-twin and payed 52for a front 100/90 19, I can't remember what size the back I bought was it was $77. Shipping was free over a $100 dollars. They were Dunlop 404.

Update:
It turns out the grinding noise was the chain.  It wasn't properly adjusted (too loose) and was dragging against something upon deceleration above 4k rpms.  So, replacing the old crappy chain fixed that problem!

And the Dunlop D404s are awesome, but keep in mind i'm comparing to crappy old F11s that were beyond dry-rotted.

BTW, don't order from bikebandit!  The got me my part after 20 calendar days  ::)
