I looked at the joker oil pressure assembly and it is indexable.  I know, duuh! They even say it there.  Nice challenge next time I feel like playing on the lathe.
I've got a shot of the pieces in the next update.

And in Las Vegas New Mexico on its maiden voyage in 1980:

It had about 20 miles on the rebuild before i headed out west. 8,000 miles and 3 weeks later...
Thanks for asking. Great memories.  ;D

Man, that's a great, great photo. And great stories. Thanks.

Hey nice garage Ron, I love the Mobil Flying Red Horse sign, I haven't seen one in years! Cheers, Terry. ;D
Thanks T. The Mobil sign is a repro of course, originals are very expensive. There are garage specific mail order houses that have all things garage, including the retro signs. The one in the middle is: "The Busted Knuckle Garage" with a bandaged digit on a fist grasping a wrench.

What i really wanted in the space where the Mobil sign is, was a retro gas pump from the pre 50s era. Came to find out they are WAY expensive. Real ones in poor shape bring $1500+. Restored ones bring, well the MobileGas pump from this guy lists at $4500. At that price you wouldn't want to leave it outside. Sure would look nice though.
http://www.bobs-garage.com/pumps/

Downsized repros are less.

So I'll settle with the $75 sign.   :D

A brief side trip: My shop: Part of my mid-life crisis, along with my FJR. Built in 03, 14' x 26':  R24 in the ceiling, R9 in the cinder block walls, 60amp service, rollup doors, etc...

That is indeed a lovely shop. Are there any threads devoted to shop pics? It'd be killer (and probably helpful) to see different people's setups etc.
here's the link, last post in July.

So, I think I've caught up with responding to all the comments. Onto the update:

Got the Joker parts in, boy are they cool. The oil pressure gauge is actually a 2 part affair. The first part is the plug into the side of the motor. The second part then pushes in the side whereever you want and is drawn in via an Allen bolt. This allows you to "clock" the gauge to suit.

The gauge itself has a tall stand pipe with a hex for a wrench. The old Steart Warner gauge had a stub with no hex, meaning you had to turn it in by hand.

So the Joker is the better set up.
Got the oil tank clean to suit and mocked up. the Stainless Steel lines are very stiff, and it took some grunting and groaning to get everything to line up. But it did.

The tank is a slightly different shade of gold. It was done at a different time, teaching the lesson, if you're going to have powder coat done in a special color, try and get all the pieces done at the same time. Its hard to rematch the color.

Disassembled the twist grip/quick throttle. Filed out some flashing, lubed everything up good. It works better, still not quite the "snap" i like to hear. After start up, we'll see if flowing some fuel thru them doesn't loosen them up a tad more. The sodablast may have left some tackiness on the slides which would definitely go away with a whiff of fuel.

Halfway thru the session, got a call from Ma, feeling poorly. She's just a mile down the street so we booked it over there. My sister had already called 911. They came and took vitals etc. But luckily all's well false alarm. At 84, can't be too careful. In and out in 30 minutes.

We spent the afternoon putting out Xmas deco, so i guess she's OK.   :D

my sincerest best wishes for your mom, ron.

thanks for the replies. i love that "period" picture of you on p1 and dig that diamond stich pattern on your, i mean you bike's seat. but i have a confession:

i kinda guessed that was a cb77 as per your bike list. i am ashamed to admit i am not so savvy about older hondas and was fishing for a background on your hidden treasure. i thought that white color may be unusual. great score! glad it went to you and not some kid who might butcher it.

that gauge is clearly a better piece than the vaunted steward warner. that you have to turn it in by hand (among other things) is slightly unsettling.

home stretch!  ;D

Thanks, Mom's fine, false alarm. She's out putting up more decorations (outside). I'll get a picture. She is over the top.

The seat, hard to see, was cut down in front by a shop in Louisville. A poorman's Gunfighter. Very comfortable.  A new suede cover was made and the stitching done. I still have it, needs new foam.

The CB77, named by Honda as the Super Hawk. followed the CB72, a 250 known as the Hawk. Both Honda and yoshimura raced the heck out of these things. And much of the racing technology survives and prospers. It had a double leading shoe front AND rear brake. My 67 650 Triumph Bonneville had only single leading shoes.

I believe it was a bone stock CL72, the scrambler version, that won the Baja 1000 back in the day.

The CB72/77 engine had a ball bearing cam! And crank, which wasn't that rare, but the balls in the cam was. The spark advancer was a complicated unit housed in the cam drive sprocket. A shaft came out of the advancer passing thru the hollow camshaft and emerging at the points plate, which was driven at the cam level not at the crank.

I think the SW gauge was designed for the automotive world. There, a line with a nut would be offered to the gauge, which was probably held fixed in a dash.

Oh I see, the diamonds you can see are in the backrest. Yeah came that way. My gloves are laying in the cutdown area of the riders seat, can't really see the stitching. But you can see where the vinyl stops and the suede starts. The suede gave the effect of Corbins waffle weave textured seat which is a component to comfort.

Yup, got the key back you're welcome.
Speaking of CL77, I'm babysitting one that a friends son inherited from his deceased grandpa. Not old enough to ride yet, so it just sits in my shop.

Not sure of the year, 66 I think  :P  eat your heart out.   ;D

I have to push it outside every Sunday to work on mine. The shop is full.

No, not me. The "grandpa" who passed did all the work. Coincidentally, when I was a babe in the parts department of Honda-Triumph of Indianapolis (age 17, 1970) this guy was a mechanic there. Purely by accident, years later, I met a guy i wanted to do some painting for me. He had married the grandpa's daughter. It was probably a year later before i found out the daughter was related to the grandpa, who I worked with.

Painter Bob has been working for me off and on up till current days, so we've gotten chummy.

fast forward 35 years later and the grandpa Honda mechanic dies. Unknown to me he had restored the CL77 and had been showing it at local fairs etc. Willed it to his grandson. Painter Bob doesn't have the room to keep it.

It looks a lot better in pictures than in person, but its still pretty sharp. Lots of extra chrome which really detracts from an official restoration, but makes it look good in casual shows.

I just furnish a place to keep it out of the rain till the grandchild is old enough to claim it. I've already planted the seed that he may be better off selling it to a collector/enthusiast and using the money to buy a more modern, safer rider, but he is sentimentally attached. It supposedly ran within a year or 2 of his death. He had been suffering from the loss of a leg in a Goldwing accident a few years earlier and hadn't ridden it though. So its going on 3 to 4 years since its been started.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year!
Back to work.
Electrical side was mocked up. Disassembled it, replaced ugly starter solenoid with better looking one, regulator too, new positive side battery cable. New chrome hardware. Green female left over. IIRC that's as it should be?

Ignition switch one of few original parts left. Mounted in frame gusset.

Forgot the rat's nest in the headlight needed sorting. Got as much done as possible. battery been on charger all day. Turned the key. Got a taillight, headlight, fr brakelight. Yay!
I have a yellow male in the headlight with no home. Got a separate thread running on this, but open for comments from any source.

Need to make a new wire for the Yellow coil lead. (Can't find the original one) Set the timing, touch up some paint, install the caseguards and motor mounts, install the oil tank. Prime everything with oil. Lots of little jobs, each absorbs time. But with a ruthless consistency, albeit slow, this will come to life!

Crushed! Mike's ACE Hardware succumbed to competition from the big box stores and closed its doors forever. They were the best, most convenient source for chrome and stainless hardware.   :(

Lookin good Ron.  :)

I know that on the 500/550, there is an unused female green/ground just behind the blinker...apparently for use with a 3 prong blinker even though it came with a two prong originally.  Maybe it's the same scenario here on your 750.  Not sure about your unused yellow.

Too bad about your local ACE store.  We have an ACE over here on the East side near 10th and Arlington that is pretty decent.  They are about the only place around here that carries stainless metric nuts and bolts in various thread pitches.  I think they have a good selection of chrome bits too, but I've never bought any there.  I always go there to get keys cut....Lowe's always seems to screw them up and they don't work....which baffles me seeing as they use an automatic machine to cut them.  ::)

I remember when i bot the LED turnsignals, the talk was i would need a 3 prong flasher. In fact i could have sworn i bot one from a forum member who had a shop going, but hasn't been around for a while. Can't find it now. I'll be contacting the place that sold me the signals ("marker lights") for their input, I'm sure they've crossed this bridge. If its as simple as plugging in that green female it would be too easy.

Luckily I'm nearly done buying hardware. I'm just keeping a list of misc pieces. I'll drop by your ACE in the spring to get them. I'm a sentimental capitalist. I realize the big box stores are here to stay. But i miss the neighborhood stores. I remember in Broad Ripple, and my home town Pittsboro (back before they had a stoplight) the old hardware stores with the thick hardwood floors, and wooden boxes with nails and "hardware" in them. Kinda dark, with single lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling.  I think Hedlunds is still like that a little at 62nd and Keystone.

Sigh.  ::)

This bike is AMAZING, great job and I can't wait to see it finished. Quick question (couldn't find the answer in the previous 40 pages or so...), I'm looking for SS oil tank lines as well. I've seen one site list them, but always out of stock. Where did you find yours at? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Got the oil tank clean to suit and mocked up. the Stainless Steel lines are very stiff, and it took some grunting and groaning to get everything to line up. But it did.

Looking good Ron

I can vouch for our local ACE (I live close to Chris)..... normally there's a number of crusty old guys wandering around ready to help :)

I'm taking your experience with Indy Powder-coating to task here soon.  I've got my XS750F frame repaired and stripped.  I'm going to take the Frame/swingarm, wheels, and some odds and ends to them in February for coating.

I just spent more money than I'd like to mention on high quality Carb parts to completely refurbish the stock Mikuni's that came with the bike.  Got them nice and clean in the industrial Ultrasonic cleaner at work ;D

Later, joe

That's good to know. There is an ACE at 86th and Westfield Blvd, but they only have chrome screws, and not all. No nuts, washers, button heads, etc.

Hope IPC does a good job for you. I removed my VIN ID plate, you may want to as well. Don't rely on them.  Otherwise they plugged and masked everything to my satisfaction. I had my disc rotors done too, they masked them all off nicely.

Hope your Mikunis, and mine, work OK.  ;D

Getting close to that 'startup' video MCR, can't wait to hear it.

Somewhere buried in my Favourites, I had colour wiring diagrams for the 500, 550, & 750.  I'll keep looking, and send you the link; if you don't get your answer on the Yellow wire 1st.
