Cam cover for '75 550F
« on: July 01, 2008, 06:46:05 PM »
Guys, I've got the dreaded cam cover wear caused by rocker shaft movement. I'm in the market for a late 550 cam cover (if anyone has one they want to sell me, by all means pipe up!). I found this one on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-CB500-CB500-CB550-CB-550-Valve-Cover-Polished_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35595QQihZ014QQitemZ330246884044QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

He says it's off a '73 CB500, but it's got the four bolt holes that I'm looking for in a late 550 cover to hold the rocker shafts down, right? What am I missing here?

For a late model assembled cam cover, you need to look for four studs and nuts as well as those four holes under the breather cover.  Like this:

That thing is only selling for $25!? That seems really cheap to me! Maybe I should buy it? Or this is not the one that I can use to replace my screwed up one on my 76 550F?

It'll fit, but it's not the upgraded one that holds the rocker shafts in place.

Just curious, what year's had this upgrade? Was it all throughout '77 or later? I'm about to email a few guys asking about this.

Honda Service bulletin 500/550 #8  Issued 8/11/76.

Improved cylinder head covers were incorporated in engines beginning with these serial numbers:

Cb550K  #1083641
Cb550F  #1133172

These numbers occur near the end of the 1976 model year.
