Help me with valve cover mystery...(pic)
« on: July 15, 2008, 08:33:11 AM »
I have my engine apart for rebuild and I painted the cases and cylinder jugs and head while I was at it.  I taped off the gasket surface where the head and cover mate and painted the rest.  After the paint set up, I placed the cover onto the head to see how it looks and there is an unpainted section that isn't covered by the cover.  I can't remember anything being attached there.  This is the exhaust side.  You can see the unpainted section with a hole in the middle.  Anyone have any ideas:

Nothing "attaches" there Bunghole. Just a bolt that fits in the hole to secure the head to the cylinder in that middle point. There is a short bolt in the rear, just above the cam chain tensioner, that does the same.

The area in your pic "looks" like a gasket surface when the pieces are apart, but it isn't. Looks good, slap that puppy together ;D

Thanks Scondon!

Now I have to touch up that spot.  Can't have an unpainted surface where no one will see it :).  I'm cursed.

Now I'm just hoping the paint will stick.  I used Duplicolor Engine enamel and gave it an hour in the oven at 200, but it still doesn't seem too tough.  Time will tell.

That paint will get very hard after a few heat cycles

Yeah, 60 minutes at 200F isn't enough.  When I was doing some paint testing a while back I was baking the parts at 400F for 90 minutes, and even then it seemed like they wanted a few heat cycles before the paint was fully cured.

Paint a smiley face in the flat area to remind yourself just how picky one can get :D Seriously, I'm the same way and am in therapy to learn how not to sweat the small stuff ;) ;D

The engine will never be as beautiful as it is right before install so be sure to take lots of pics to preserve the moment ;)
