1976 550F almost got it perfect.
« on: July 16, 2008, 07:31:51 PM »
OK, just finished my bike and took it around the block.  It is a 1976 550F with stock 4-1 with an Emgo megaphone and Emgo pod filters.  I changed the main jets to 105's and reset the air/fuel mixture to 1 1/2 turns.  I started the bike and it idled great (around 1100rpm) I rode the bike up the road and everything was going great (choke was alittle on) once it warmed up I took the choke off and it wanted to die... so I put the choke back on alittle.  I made it to the 4th stop sign when the rpms started climbing????  It acted as if it was running with a high idle, but when I pulled the plugs they were black.  I cleaned them and then started again.  This time it acted as if it was starving for fuel surging up then down.  I know I am very close to getting the carbs and everything lined out, but I am still off alittle.  I have not raised my needle jets. What do you all think? I think I am running rich.  What should be my next thing to do?  Adjust the idle mixture or just raise the needle jet one notch? Should I run a hotter plug?

Well I pulled the carbs off today and #3 cylinder was dry.  Now I am going to go through them again and then bench sync them.  While I have them apart I am going to raise the needle jet up one notch to lean the carbs out I am still running rich and I dont have enough idle air screw play to lean it out using it.  I hope this will fix all of my problems any other ideas?

idle/air screw=0 to 1/4 trottle
needle         =1/4 to 3/4 trottle
main jet       =3/4 to wot(wide open trottle)
when you clean the carbs,read the carb forums here first,theres some well written info on how to do it right,make sure you pull the idle jets out aswell,as they are really hard to clean when they are in the carb...
