What do you think about the new exhaust? (img, vid)
« on: July 30, 2008, 10:55:58 AM »
Just got this rigged up last night, I'm not to sure how much I like it yet. A couple things that both me are the length and the angle they sit at. I can easily shorten them a inch and bend them to have a slight upward angle. I really like how they sound, they sound exactly like the Mivvs IMO, and I love the chrome.  FYI these are NOS from the 70's not sure on the brand I vaguely remember MFG? but could easily be wrong.

Anyways let me know what you think, and any idea's on how to shorten them and bend them I would love to hear.

Pics:

(ignore the horribly mismatch paint, I have to paint it soon but not sure on the color yet)

If you don't mind my artsy fartsy two cents; the length while a bit on the long side, looks good. They lengthen the bike visually, not that it needs it, but I would try to tip the silencers an inch or so. They almost seem to droop. But that could also be because of the angle of the driveway, or my computer chair is broken.

:D no it's not your computer chair, it's actually however you look at it they seem to droop. Unless your laying with it perfectly level. It's actually a eye trick. It mufflers bend slightly away from the bike and in turn make them seem lower. I'm definitely going to tilt them up a tad and shorten them an inch. Thanks for your 2 cents, thats what I want to hear.

I'm open to any comments. Thanks for looking

I like the look but maybe a little shorter. How hard to shorten?

Well I could shorten them a inch (maybe inch and a half) real easy, just with a rag, wood block, and mallet and just hammer the mufflers on farther. I'm not sure about shortening them more like 5 inches (which could be ideal) I would probably have to cut the muffler entry cleanly 2-3 inches.

I like the look but maybe a little shorter. How hard to shorten?

Looking again it seems if you were to put a yardstick (metrestick?) along the top edge it would lie flat but if you follow the centerline to the exhaust opening the droop is evident.

If the tip of the exhaust ends at the edge of the tire I think it would be an improvement.

OK, that's four cents. :)

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated.

@bozo4onion: The heads actually come into a 1 instead of staying in 2 but side by side and the muffles closing the gap. So I can only slide the mufflers up so far.

@Ecosse: Definitely agree. It's almost there and I should be able to get them even with the rear tire and tilt them up a bit.

@cb650 bobber: Thanks man, makes me feel a little more sure about the pipes (I'm the most iffy person ever so far when it comes to changing my bike)

Thanks again, always open for more suggestions w/e.

Thanks for the vid!

I dunno about the pipes. I like the way BCR pipes look on the 550 and those would probably be pretty long if you layed them flat like you pipes. Maybe if you kick them up they won't look so long.

Thanks for the 2 cents guys, I agree with you. I'm going to shorten them an inch and bend them up a 2-3 inches.

@hymodyne: The mufflers totally remind me of dunstalls and the whole thing has some nice 70's thick chrome.

@hoodellyhoo: I'll post some before and after pics in a bit, waiting for my strong friend to come over for some bending :P If you want the number for the guy I bought these from let me know, I'd be glad to share.

I would like to bend them up 4-5 inches but the rear axle bolts are in the way so I would have to sacrifice the width of my bike and they would be sticking out 2 far (almost like wings).

I think they are nice. I would do 2 things. Make the end a slashcut and extend the swingarm! It would make the bike look lower and sleeker and once I saw the slashcuts on my bike, I knew I could never go back!

Eldar that sounds like a very cool idea (although I am very vague on what your talking about).

Could you please share some more info, pics, examples with me?

Thanks Eldar.

ADDED: Check this out eldar,

That would lower it a couple inches and put the rear shocks at a angle (not sure but after searching it seems like a lot of people wanted do that)

I'm also investigating the CB750 or CB500 swing-arms which I hear are longer but haven't found any good info that supports they will bolt on correctly.

IMHO slash cuts are for the Harley crowd.  I think the look of the peashooters is in keeping with the style of these bikes.  Benjie's exhausts are similar in length and style to yours except they are typically bent up (Don't have the link for his site off hand) Gives a racier look although yours looks kind of cool parallel to the ground. . . .

And a pic (from his website) of his peashooters on a 750 mule and one of a sweet 500/550 (from his website). . . .

I thnk you would have different thoughts if you actually SAW it on a bike. 4 slashcuts, sure do not look harley I can tell you that. besides, I dont know where you get hd from, I have never seen those pipes on hd. HOWEVER a slightly different style has been used on ujms in the 80s. The v65 used a style of slash.
Plus ALL FOUR tilt up. Personally to me though, a peashooter style looks feminine. It conveys a look of no power which of course means nothing but I do not know of anyone that goes for the wimp look on their bike.

Actually now that you mention it Eldar, four slash cuts sound cool looking. Did you say you had that on your ride? Like to see it if possible! I think the late eighties Magna had 4 slash pipes and it looks pretty mean.

As for Benjie's, they are pretty cool IMO and stainless steel to boot. BUT... for the better part of a grand (almost $1000) causes one to pause, at least it causes me to... pause I mean.

Me, it causes me to pause.

That is to say it's expensive. And strangedaze39 has already bought pipes don't forget.

I think they look great but if they ended a bit before the back tire they would look greater.

Where did you get them? I haven't really seen much in the way of exhausts for our bikes. That sounds a lot more "inline 4" than my stock pipes with Jardine mufflers.
You need to get some exhaust gaskets so it quits ticking at the header though.

I think it looks pretty good as is.  It would probably look better a bit shorter.  I think the horizontal look is great.  It might help if you set the angle so the bottom edge of the muffler is parallel with the road.

Yep lose at least 5 inches bro, nice sound too.
Where the heck did you find mint pipes like that anyway?

Eldar, show us some pics of your bike.  Off the top of my head, a peashooter is much closer to an engorged phallus than some weenie pipe with a slash hole on the end of it ;D  . . . I know he already has pipes; the pics from Benjies site was to show him how they might have looked turned up!!

I will have to get some pics up. Maybe I can swing that this weekend. I just cant see peas on a 77/78 with their more modern look. 76 and earlier, sure. I will try to get my bike cleaned up a little tonight as it has a lot of road grime on it and get some pics.

I think you either need to shorten the pipe (muffler closer to motor) or as the others send kick the pipe up (ala BCR style). Either way you are on the right track..

His pipes are actually more like "reverse cone megaphones" than peashooters.  A bit more stubby.  Infact, quite similar to the end details on the stock 750K8 pipes (which are only slightly more streamlined looking than the pre77 stock pipes)  Not sure I agree with your stylistic conclusions Eldar, but of course, to each is own.  BTW it would be hard to get more masculine / phallical than the stock 77/78 K pipe end detail!

I think you may be surprised. The stock pipes were nice but when I got my bike, they were all rusted out so looked like crap. When I put the slashcuts on, it looked really good.

Thanks guys for the input, it all helped.

1 problem I'm having is their is slight leak coming from the header exits and muffler entry joint. I need to somehow fill that gap something like solder/silicone/? I really have no idea what to use that wont burn off. Anyone have experience or an idea for filling that slight gap (and clamps aren't working)

I'm not going to tilt it up like benji's, because when you do that it looks "cool" but you have to bend them away from the bike also to avoid the rear axel. OR put them above the rear axel which would be an incredible bend that would probably ruin the headers. I think I'll slightly tilt it up till it's at least doesn't look like any sag or possibly a slight tilt up (like my old exhaust)

Not sure, without seeing, what your leak is like but check this link out. Permatex has some good stuff in my experience.

http://www.permatex.com/products/Automotive/automotive_gasketing/gasket_sealants.htm

I think exhaust in that area you described is in the 200 degree range, someone correct me, so maybe the Super 300 or Aviation brush on might help. A problem area might be vibration over time; depending on the leak, sealer might not be enough. Pix?

Good luck. :)

On my pipes I used epoxy called steel stick or something like that. You twist off what you need, kneed the stuff till it is all mixed and wrap it around. I had to do that since I do not have a welder. Been like that over a year now and seems to work good. Just a little unsightly but since it is hid mostly from view, except fora little bit, it is not bad.

You can always build your own with some cones and bends.  I just found some breat Permatex stuff in a pressurized 4 oz. can called "the Right Stuff".  Says it goes to 500 degrees.  The person who turned me on to it uses it to see all the pipe joints on their new bikes.
