Head gasket replacement on CB350 F
« on: August 10, 2008, 07:38:03 AM »
Hi All,

I'm about to replace the head gasket on my 72 CB350 four for the second time. The result of my first effort was an oil leak as bad or worse than when I started. The first time I used a off brand gasket set this time I have Honda parts. I'm looking for advice... do you use sealant on the "o-ring" seals the seal the oil passages? How about on the head gasket? What do you use in these locations?

Thanks!
John

I never use anything on head gaskets, perhaps a light smear of light grease/vaseline on o-ring to allow it to align itself. Make sure head and barrel mating surfaces are perfectly clean with acetone and since it is second time is head warped it may need skimming. Always use a torque wrench to tighten down and use correct sequence of tightening head nuts.

I used a copper spray adhesive on mine. It wasn't necessary, but I didn't see how it would hurt.

Not that I'm an expert, but did you re-torque the head after running a bit on the last head gasket? There was a recent thread where someone had a new head gasket leaking but hadn't re-torqued the head after putting on a few miles.

Thanks all. No, I never got to re-torque the head after replacing the gasket. It was leaking oil as soon as it warmed up. So, clearly I did not get one of the seals seated correctly or the seal is not to spec (it was a non-Honda gasket kit). I checked the cylinder and head for flatness but did not use gasket sealer on the seals, just grease. I thought that might be the problem. I have Honda parts now and plan to revisit the job in couple of days. Thanks again. John
