Nice bike young Grove, these old bikes will teach you soooo much as you get them back together.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

That's your oil pump. (That is apparently leaking).

Clean it.  Dry it. Spray with foot powder, and see where the oil seeps out when run the engine.

Video seems unlikely due to the absence of an actual video camera. ::)  Is there such a thing as an over the shoulder cam? ;)

Anyway, it might not be the oil pump itself that is leaking, but rather the oil pressure switch located on top.  I notice it is wet with oil, too.

Anyway, you can run the engine and see if it is leaking.  If it's slow, then the powder thing will show where it's creeping out.

By the way, K2R in a spray can will also work.  But, it can be hard on paint/plastic.  Another alternative is Whiting compound.  It's a powder you mix with alcohol (or other solvent safe for the surface it is being applied upon) and smear on whatever you want to suck the oil out of.  The alcohol evaporates and the white powder clings and changes color as it draws out the oil. (Used on wood gun stocks that have been oil soaked.)

Spray foot powder is easier to find and the talc shows the same color change wherever oil is absorbed. (I think Bob Wessner was the first to suggest this product choice, actually.)

It was indeed the switch... Grabbed the one off the parts bike and annoying ass leak is fixed!!! HORRAY!! No more cleaning disgusting grime off of my bike every day...

Got a lot done today...

Ordered new f&r sprockets... Fixed current chain... Fixed leak... Replaced shifter-seal anyway (had it, why not..)

AND I even went for a short ride with a fellow enthusiast on this site... SPARTY!

It was a fun ride.. First time meeting face to face, overall good times.  Hopefully many more to come...


EDIT:: Just wanted to say thanks to TT for the tip on the powder... Worked wonders.   ;)

Went for a short chilly ride with A GROVE today after work.  That boy can ride!  Now I remember how I use to ride when I was his age.  Crazy fast in the turns.  That 550 is meant for the twisties, much more so than the 750.  I can't wait for spring when his bike is finished and we can go on a longer ride in nice weather.  My fingers were blue when I got home.

I wasn't going THAT fast... ;)

I have big plans for the other motor in my parts bike.  My dad even SUGGESTED I build a stronger motor up over winter to put in for summer.  I just laughed and went to work on what to get for it....

Off the bat I want to get new rings, new cam, etc.  But I'm not sure what else is needed/wanted for a strong engine build without going into machining, etc.

Opinions?   Maybe trying to keep upgrades under $800?

Also, anyone know of a good source to get progressive fork springs?  and seals, etc?

OKAY - so springs here.. and I'll have my license back in 19 days. (gotta love getting it suspended...) I have some extra birthday mulla and need to do some work on the bike.  I'm piecing my dual-disk together now, need to rebuild the forks, make new headlight ears, get new turn signals for front and rear and fix some wiring.

-Progressive ft. springs
-new pro-moly seals
-uni factory air filter
-all-balls stem kit
-OEM honda rings to last me for the summer as I would LOVE to do a full motor build, but money wont allow for that anytime soon.

Those are the parts I am for sure ordering.. I want to get rid of the gator boots as well - where can I source a set of wipers for my forks? I have seen it done 'round these parts... I also need new brake pads.  What is the BEST out there? I have been looking at the EBC kevlar pads as well as the Tufstop Heavy-Duty Ceramic pads.  EBC's are kevlar compound as the tufstops are sintered.  Sintered pads usually have more bite from what I have been told but am still unsure what to do with. 

Opinions?  My fork/f. brake are both in dyer need of rebuild.  I want to make sure I hit all the points without going overboard.

EDIT:: may have read from my above posts, but before winter I swapped over a non-leaky oil pressure switch from a parts bike.  I was in a hurry to meet sparty for a ride and got very frustrated with the wire connected to the oil switch.  I ended up completely mangling the connector and left it be (AKA not connected to the oil pressure switch).  What exactly is this wire doing?  Is it necessary for the performance/longevity of the bike, etc? have I caused any damage running it for probably 200 total miles without one? My initial thoughts were it was a sensor to the light console on the handlebars for "oil"...but I am really not sure.

you don't "need" the oil light. ....but you don't "need" a helmet either  ;)


front brakes are not that tuff to rebuild, my advice would be to rebuild the whole system at once.. meaning: master cylinder rebuild kit, stainless lines if you can afford it, caliper seal,new pads, a new caliper piston wouldn't hurt but most likely is not "necessary"

IMHO the different styles or brands of pads is not that noticeable unless your on a track, or ride like you are ...get the cheap ones

Welp, Im back.  this nice weather and being laid off from work gave me the motivation and time to get my cb550 back on the road.
