delaying the inevitable pipe cancer
« on: August 23, 2008, 06:44:12 PM »
So you got a set of stock pipes that look great except they have the cancer on the underside that comes with that irratating exaust leak well i have that problem and finding flawless pipes for a 82 nighthawk is like finding jimmy hoffas body. Well just messing around to find a quick fix that was cometically acceptiable i came up with the idea of cutting up a beer can and rolling it inside out and mounting it with worm clamps and it really didn't look all that bad IMO and the exaust leak is totally gone. I have to tidy this up a bit but i have been testing this since the start of summer and i didn't have to replace the aluminum until now and with a little extra effort one could cut out the cancer seal it up with epoxy remount the tecate pipe saver kit ( thats what i call it) and keep those stock pipes a bit longer till one can find a cheaper set or whatever.

That's a pretty neat fix, you'd need to look damn hard to see it down there. :D
Just having spent $550 to import a set from USA I know what you mean by trying to find decent pipes for our 650's.
What would happen if you used slightly better alloy than beer can stuff?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Don't like beer from cans, any one with photos of a long neck bottle of Bud, or Coors holding their pipes together?

Please not the Light or Silver varieties.

Well, I posted about it a while ago and the consensus was that it wouldn't last long. I decided to give it a try, and as I haven't ridden the bike for long, I decided to wait until I could give more info.

Nevertheless, as you started this, I put some pictures here for your consideration. I used epoxi, a coke can and adhesive aluminum foil. It has withstand about 120 miles until now.

Did it blow out?

Not yet, that's why I was waiting to put the pictures, just to make sure whether it works or not.

The hole in the rear is huge, and as it is not "flat", the aluminum didn't seal perfectly at some spots. That's where the foil has come unstuck, due to the hot air blowing out. If the rest of the aluminum resist, I will leave it that way, or probably I will just seal them with a little more epoxi.

What i was thinking was using the tube epoxy (looks like a hot dog)  you know the kind you have cut off a chunk and kneed up to mix the A and B, what i was thinking was being able to get some on the inside of the pipe to overlap and also be part of what is on the outside and be able to resist the pressure.  (not sure if that makes sense but like how a rivet works) it mushrooms on the opposite side.
