Converting rear drum to cable pull ?????
« on: August 26, 2008, 11:42:56 AM »
After completely elliminating the stock parts that make up the brake assembly for a 550 rear drum brake, I am now attempting to make a setup work with some rear sets.
The project thread can be seen at http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=34836.0 if you need an idea of how I welded on some rear set brackets.
I currently have the rear drum set up to work with a single bar link straight to the rear set pedal.  When you push down on teh lever, it directly pulls on the drum brake.
I don't really like the feel of the one link set up and would like to consided changing over to a cable pull system.  Has anyone converted their bike to a cable push/pull system.  Would there be any consequeces of doing so?

i would say you can use a cable,no problem...
as long as you make sure it's safe, brakes can safe your life one day...so it better work good, and not break off when you slam the brake in a panic moment...

Thanks for that pic.  Is the brake hub a custom unit?  Does it have the cable mount cast into the cover like many of the old race bikes that uses a link system?  I was thinking about welding on a cable retainer on the swingarm where the cable could be adjusted and then run the cable pll directly to the brake arm acuator. Any ideas on teh best way to do this

Like fishhead said, use the bolt that connects the hub and the rod, is by far the easiest wat to do and works great.

Good luck, Rob
Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.

Anyone have any good pics of the rear attaching to the break arm? In that pic above you can only see it attaching to the pedal.

Converted my thumper to a cable system.
Had to isolate the cable housing with two brackets mounted to the frame.
Turn it up !
