The '79 CBX is on my short list of "Bikes I will own before I die".  The '79 is the most desirable to me.

Reasons:

I prefer the "standard" Comstar instead of the reverse comstars.
150MPH Speedo.  The rest all had the retarded Federal 85MPH speedo.
Hottest cam
Working ignition advance mechanism ('80 model bikes ignition advance was identical, but units malfunctioned, dropping the bike 20hp.  If the factory recall has been done, it's supposedly a non-issue, but some folks still maintain that the '79 advance is hotter.)
Five-circuit carbs versus four-circuit.

From what I gather, the '79 and '80 bikes, (but ESPECIALLY the '79), were max-HP hot-rods with tons of power (105hp), iffy brakes and marginal suspensions.  It was all about that incredible engine.

The later '81-'82 (touring) bikes were detuned down to 85-90hp, but "broadened in the mid-range" to be more "driveable".  However, they got MUCH better suspensions, with the Unit Pro-Link monoshock rear end, and a vastly improved front fork.  The brakes were internally vented as well, like a car's, and were also improved.  The fairing and luggage also made them livable daily.

The faired bikes are arguably better riders, but screw all that, make mine a '79.  However, prices reflect that taste, (EVERYBODY wants a '79) and good, clean, original, low-mile, unmolested (is there any other way to buy a bike?) '79s command a premium, even compared to the "similar-spec" 1980 bikes.

I worked on a bunch of them 'back in the day'
Wasn't any fun doing a cylinder head though, several days to get 24 valves right.
Nice bike, bit heavy, incredibly smoooooth.
not too difficult to work on, easier to loosen drive chain and front/top engine mounts to get carbs off (cant remember if it pivots on top or bottom engine mount, I think lower one?)

Well, GroovieGhoolie, you are correct about some of the '79/'80 changes, but there are some positive ones too.

Improvements in the '80:
+ much improved air assisted forks
+ Showa FVQ adjustable-damping shocks with 30 different damping/spring preload combinations
+ a stronger swing arm that pivots on needle and ball bearings rather than bushings
+ a frame with more substantial gusseting
+ a wider rear rim
+ larger oil cooler
+ A "vacuum-operated" petcock that hopefully prevents the engine destroying hydro-lock that could happen on the '79 if you forgot to turn the fuel OFF
+ tail-section storage compartment that locks
+ more even power delivery with no lean spot glitches that are present in the '79
+ and last but not least, mine was made in Marysville Ohio (NOTE:  Not all of the '80's were made in Ohio.)  This is the first American bike I have owned since my old Cushman in 1961.

The '80 doesn't  have as much horsepower and isn't as fast or quick as the '79, but if fast and/or quick was what I wanted any current 600(or larger) crotch rocket will absolutely humiliate the CBX.  I have owned both a '79 and an '80 and I like my '80 better.

Now, about that ridiculous 85 MPH speedometer.  I NEVER go over 85.  And I'm sticking to that story. ;) ;)

I don't argue ANY of that.  The '80 bike is superior to the '79 bike.  I would hope it is, since if it wasn't, Honda clearly doesn't learn anything between model years and, well you get the point...

As it is, I want the '79 DESPITE all the "shortcomings", since it's marginally hotter and faster than the later bikes (in the CBX range).  While I know a modern 600 will SPANK it, knowing that I own the hottest version of a vintage bike, that is important to me, ergo, I want the '79.

That's why I bought a Sandcast 750: it's the hottest (no-compromise) factory version of the SOHC 750 out there.  And it's why I want a first-year CB350 Twin, since it's hotter than the later versions.

When it comes to VINTAGE Hondas, the first-year bikes are always the hottest (and hence, most collectible), so I want them.

Personal failing, what can I say...

A friend of mine owned a Honda dealership. In March, 1985 Honda offered new 1982 CBXS to dealers for $1585, but they had to take 5. I bought one at cost and rode it for 2 years and sold it for $2000. Parts and service were outrageous and dealers would not touch them after they were out of warranty. Although they looked cool, I just never warmed up to it. A GS1100, CB1100, or KZ1000 were a lot less complicated. Granted, 82s were probably the least desirable, but never feel they lived up to the hype.

Reading this makes me wish honda would build a bike like this again. They used to be the innovators, always one step ahead of the other maturer's. They have become such a conservative company these days, where's their b@##s? When will they ever make another bike like the CBX that is so far ahead of everyone else, something that screams, "Ha Ha! look what we can do! Take THAT!".

Also, look at the Goldwing! The 1972 prototype is a monster with an opposed 1470cc 6 cylinder engine. The Honda engineers really just wanted to see how big they could go in the 70s. Wish they would push things like they used to.

Imagine if Honda made the goldwing into a "sport bike" instead of turning the naked standard into a tourer. The early naked goldwings were very attractive bikes.

I think the new V-5 VFR is about as adventours as they have been for a while ::)

I saw the coolest looking CBX chopper once. Spikey would have been in love. There were spires all over that bike. The kind of thing where it went beyond tasteful, it went beyond tacky, and actually somehow landed back in the land of Cool. The guy riding it knew how to use his right wrist, too.   ;D

dids - you are clearly too young to have been around at the time (  :o ), but if you hang around any of the classic bike events in Kent (or even go as far as Box Hill or the Ace Cafe), you are bound to find one sooner or later. The owners will talk to anyone who is interested!

There's one here in Reading that the guy brings out two or three times a year for classic bike shows and the Xmas Toy Run.

Here's my 79.  I've owned it for fifteen years now and have had essentially no failures.  If you keep up with the maintenance, they're no big deal.  I'd rather do a valve check on this bike than my FJR.  I'd guess mine is worth $10K or a little better.

I saw a real nice one at the local shop the other day, too.  Beautiful bikes.

What are you talking about, that chopper is amazing! In what other time in history have the style of bikes got THAT outlandish. Its ridiculous and I love it. Someone needs to save a few of those time capsules before they all get 'restored" :'(  I would think that around the time these bikes were new there were more customized ones rolling around than stock. If only I was around to see them :D
