can i put another tank on

will a 1976 cb500 tank fit on a 1974 cb550 fram without any mods? i know the petcocks are different but is that the only thing?

cb500 twin? the last cb500 four was 1973 and the tank is pretty much the same as your 74 550.

Anything will fit so long as you have welding/fabrication skills but no the tanks will not be a direct bolt on. Even if the front cups line up the rear mount will not.

i did a detailed post on the cb500t tank on a cb550. easy enough, but takes some mods. cb550s have wider tank mounts the most cbs. if you cut a 1/4" off each side of the mount, you can run all kinds of tanks: cb500t, cb750, cb450, etc...
