45 LPs
« on: December 03, 2008, 02:39:13 PM »
ok so I was searching around and listening to different versions of
"Paint It Black" and ran across this.

I just have it plugged to computer speakers (amplified ones but still)

notice he states this is recorded in "hot mono' which when cranked up
does blow the stereo away that I remembered being released.

while your at it listen to "Riders on the Storm" on 45

Man I wish I'd saved my 45s

Ya know, the memory is the first thing to go, right?

A 45 is not an LP. An LP ran at 33 1/3 rpm and had multiple songs on each side.....well usually, I do recall a few LPs that only had one song on a side...but it was like a 20 min version of a song.
A good bike mechanic only needs two tools, WD40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move, but should, use the WD40. If it does move but shouldn't use the duct tape.

Still have all my LP's  (LP stood for Long-Playing)  aka albums.

Got a turntable-to-digital converter last Xmas but haven't yet bothered to load & launch the software that does it.

Kinda neat listening to all the old LPs again.

45's were singles.  And, as the name implies, spun at 45 rpm.

Very old records played at 78 rpm!

Gee, am I really THAT old??

I am so glad I did not toss my 45's or LP's.  A radio was always on while tinkering in the garage or when working on my bikes or GTO.  Collected many records and bought a 1971 Rock-Ola juke box in 1983.  The way I remember the date is my first son was born in 1983.  My wife said I should sell my 77 750 since I am a Dad now.  So I did and bought the Rock-Ola with the money.  Funny thing how it continues to play with no problems after all these years.

For a six year period I sold over 100 turntables and other pieces of vintage audio equipment on ebay in it's early days. I own hundreds of albums. Now this may sound strange. I hate records. Always have. They all have pops and crackles. I was so happy when the CD player the came out I bought the first generation. I still own the first turntable I bought as a stockboy at a high end stereo shop. A very fine Dual. It sits in a case with the stereo gear. It is connected to nothing. It is an ornament to match the other vintage gear. I do like tube audio and use quite a bit of it. Sorry I will be flamed by purists.  I know about dynamic range etc, I just hate records.

when they say records have the best sound, they don't mean the overall sound is the best... it is what you hear through all of the record's faults.   ;)

i really dig my daft punk double set... i really don't care what rpm they are, mine are highly adjustable.   :P
shout is always a good one to play backwards... although i've never really heard any subliminal messages.    ;D
my favorite though... the old jazz and samba albums... nothing like it when its on vinyl.

You got that a little backwards, Bobby.  The purists love tube audio.  The best stuff built today still uses tubes.  They refer to the sound as having a more fluid sound.

tube heads.
tube amps.
I will buy after I hit the lotto. not really just some of that is out of my range.
Nothing would be better than 2 mono block tube amps running each speaker.
Oh wait get some speakers than can run the lows off one amp smaller tube amp for the mids and high's. Then running 4 amps. Oh man thats my goal. :)

I dunno, there's just some more "personal" about vinyl.

Sure, vinyl is more labor-intensive, but it seems like if you want to listen to vinyl, you're listening with purpose.  It requires significantly more effort, but with that effort comes more appreciation for the music.  CD's are more fire-and-forget... You pop a CD in and press a button and music starts playing until the album is over.  It removes all human interaction from the equation.

Here's a pop quiz for all you vinyl lovers out there...  How many grooves are on a 33 1/3 record?  How about a 45?

ok I should have said 45 vinyl, I had so few of them since I was born in the "LP" time period.

Anyway, I do have several old LP's and still have my turntable from the late 70's (Onkyo)
which works and I use occasionally.  ;D

I'm going to star buying up those old 45s when the wife forces me to go antique shopping.  ;)

I still have the remnants of a digital commercial studio I ran for a few years ending in 2003. I've had a lot of fun since converting out of print vinyl for folks. I kind of think of it as saving music that'll become extinct as the remaining records are lost or destroyed. My uncle brought over a disc of radio broadcasts by Harry James with an 8 piece group from the early 50's two weeks ago, causing me to remove all the stuff I had shoved on top of my turntable cover since I last did one of these transfers.
I've used a few different pieces of software to remove audio artifacts from records and like the Waves products for doing so. The James record was very clean and I did not use any processing except a small bit of limiting compression before printing.
Are there just one groove per side on vinyl records? I'd never thought about that question before.

I will never say that I am right. I just hate records. The fine vintage audio gear needed to be able produce all of the ranges. Today with sub woofers and electronic delays they cover up crappy design. The speakers were far higher quality. I covet my Tannoys.
If any of you want a really good table radio the Tivoli One was designed Henry Kloss and has amazing sound. I retired my KLH Mod 8 and replaced it with the Tivoli.

I use a Berning EA2-150 tube amp.
Built by a kid in Potomac, Md. in the 70's.
Run all of my sound through a Berringer Virtualizer Pro
which can add any one  of 100's of effects to the sound.
Some people , I know, find this annoying.

Dan, I had asked if that was the case previously. I think there's like a tenth of a mil between the grooves on standard recordings as well.
