WHEELIE POWER!!
« on: December 04, 2008, 07:43:40 AM »
So... These old bikes are super fun to work on AND ride, but how many of you have actually been able to ride a successful wheelie on one of these "tanks."  is it even possible given their "mellow" powerband and weight/riding position?

I wheelied my 400F heading out of the parking garage at work.... I wouldnt attribute it to the powerband though.

This topic has come up around here a few times. Several members have done them and some of them have video evidence or avatars to back them up!

Most members will flame you for even considering a wheelie and may even go so far as call you a squid....ofcourse that might be becasue they are GHOF's and forget what it's like to be young and bulletproof!  ;)

Well that adage don't make no sense.  I had to ask how to ride a bicycle once, glad I did try it.  Had to ask how to start a fire, had to ask how to drive, had to ask how to unhook a bra...

Got the backs of my hands slapped with a ruler by a nun in Sunday school when I "practiced" on the little cutie sitting in front of me.

It was worth it.

I do not agree fully with what you say.  I "know" how to wheelie.  I can wheelie for DAYS on my trials motorcycle, hell I can wheelie my dads KLR 650... I've wheelied a friends duc. monster... And they all do things differently.  The monster just needed some throttle ;) the klr is all about body position, and the trials bike lives to wheelie... that being said, it is roughly 175lbs full tank ;)

I've tried to get my cafe'd 550 to wheelie, pull, pull, and rip the throttle, still nothing.  My bikes not in great shape, tho.  Needs an engine overhaul (winter) and new fork inards, etc.  I was simply asking the question as I didn't know if it was strictly my bike, me, or both.

Some bikes are easy to wheelie and some are about technique. Yes the bike is heavy but really anybody with streetbike expirence should be able to pull it up. I don't think it is the engine being tired so much as the clutch will give before you can actually loft it. It isn't a pull and whack kind of wheelie, it takes finesse. I could wheelie for days on my old cr125 and it was nothing at all like wheeling my 500lbs 86 1000R ninja or my 75 cb750 - not even close.

Most of us GHOF's have been there and done that when yer daddy was practicing fer you   ;D  ;)  Now that we've done that we don't need to anymore. Hell, I used to try to wheelie my GTO and SS with 10 inch wrinkle walls only to rip out trannies and rear ends and I don't do stupid #$%* like that anymore either. Expensive. Been there done that 2. The only thing that may erase my memories is Alzheimers or doing stupid things and killing my old fool self. Now lets talk about memories of women!!
Anymore questions junior?? :D

I have not had any luck on mine yet, but i can tell you that I can do em on my VTX 1800 and did them on all my dad's goldwings  ;D

There was a perfect spot to do them near my parents house when I was growing up. The road met a cross street that had a huge crown in it and leveled off on the other side. So rolling in first gear up the crown and punch it... I could hang his 83 goldwing 1/2 way down the block until the carbs stopped feeding the engine and she would come crashing down. I know not good for the front end at all, but what the heck I was 16 after all. Good news is that bike is still going strong with 90 thousand miles on the old girl.  I did get grounded for a week when mom and dad caught me doing it once  :o

The good old days.... young, dumb, and full of...  :D :D :D

Your Average Honda sohc 4, you probably got to use the clutch, unless you run real low gearing..

Hello people, 754 has it spot on, get rid of the clipons and get your weight back a bit and you can wheelie these things for miles, {of course this is something i did in my youth.. ::)}Actually i used to find my old 754's were quite easy to get up once you were used to the balance point.

Um, I like stitches, they make better scars...and chicks dig scars... :D
At this point, my liver probably isn't of any use to even me, let alone anyone else... ;)
