Was there a 1973 CB550?
« on: January 01, 2009, 01:40:11 PM »
Greetings.
Need some help here as I try to decide whether parts will fit on my recently purchased 1974 CB550.  Its frame number is 1005962 which, according to Internet info, is the first year this bike was produced.  However, I continue to see references to 1973 550s.  My bike was made in September '73 - is this the cause of the confusion?  Do people call the 1974 model year a 1973 bike just 'cause it was made that year?
If not, will 1973 550K parts fit on a '74?
Thanks for any clarification.
Kevin

First model year of 550 was 1974 in the USA but in order to be there in 74 they had to be "built" in 73 and the have to conform to all federal rules on the date they are built not sold, hence the date on the vin plate.

All mods are by frame or engine number and as long as you quote those you will have no problems with either 73 or 74 parts, and in fact most other years up to but not including 77
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).
