Car style ignition switch
« on: January 05, 2009, 07:32:38 am »
Has anyone used a ignition switch like this? on-off- and push to start. Like a car.

If so, can you explain the wiring to me?

I don't get it what do you need explained? The switch has three positions: Off, On, and Start. For On you are going to need to connect the wires that are at the stock ignition switch to the contact that connects when the key is in the on position. For start, you are going to need to move your starter wires from the right handle bar to the contact that connects in the start position. there will be ground contact (or not depending on which switch you bought) and the starter switch ground and the ignition ground wire need to go to that.

All the bikes seem to have different wiring harnesses.  You want us to describe how to wire all bikes in the world?

Do we assume they are all stockers with no changes?

Some bikes switch ground to the solenoid, some switch power.  It's kind of important to know which you have.

Quick poll:
A:  Should I just ignore posts that have no way of answering, without the requisite 20 questions regarding subject matter.
B:  Play the 20 questions game with each poster, dragging/prying out essential information in a painstaking manner, greatly extending the post count?
C:  Reply with standard  "Have you searched?"  response?
D:  Actively deride the poster in order to chase off the forum to persue other interests?
E:  Just ignore the entire forum as a huge waste of time?

I think I'm busy the rest of the day... ::)

Cheers, ;D

(1)switch in link looks like poo.... your friendly neighborhood NAPA has something better.

(2)connect brown wires together so tail light works.

(3)Honda starter solenoid has 2 wires... connect one to 'start' and ground the other.

(4)red to 'bat' and black to 'ign'

+1 on this ignition - the keys on them are real #$%*e and the lock cylinder is not much better.

I bought a switch at NAPA for $7.  It's labeled as Borg-Warner and works fine.  I used the top of an old spray can to cover up the backside terminals from dirt and debris.  Unless you're smarter at wiring than me, you'll lose the headlight cutout function of the old starter button.  It will still crank but it doesn't help when your battery's weak from sitting or getting old.

I went with one offered on www.cyclexchange.net, much more sturdy, the one shown at the beginning of this thread looks somewhat sickly to me.

The bike is a 77 cb750f. The answer is the 3 wires that connect into the back of the plug into the switch is the black and red from the oem switch and the yellow/red from the starter button.  I got the answer from kingkustoms. Very helpful. Also using his wiring diagram to eliminate some unwanted wiring from the harness.

That diagram is exclent, makes understanding what is what very easy. I got one from him when he was offering them for free, I'm going to go and buy one from him just because it's that good.
