500 gear shift mechanism?
« on: January 17, 2009, 02:26:06 AM »
Hi! I've disassembled my cb500 to bits and pieces.. The spares were delivered last week and i'm about to put it all back together. But to be honest, I have no clue how the transmission and the forks come together. I didn't take the gears off the shafts but still this seems to be quite the puzzle. ??? Any thoghts how I could get them back together..
PS: I wan't to learn to do this so a mechanic is not (never say never) an option. :P

Its all detailed in the manual that you ought to have
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

I don's know if my manual has got all the pages but it seemed kinda short.. Can I just stick the shifter forks to their places on the shafts or do I have to have the gears in some exact order for it to work?
Cheers! ;D

With the selectors on the drum in the case the shafts will only fit if the gears are on the selectors right

I hope not.

I'm off to pick up my latest eBay purchase this morning.

Cast your experienced eye over this Bryan, is it all there?

You cant go wrong if you are carefull and make sure all the bearings sit on the pins/rings that locate them and the gears sit on the selectors.

IF you removed the selectors from the drum you have to be carefull to get them back on in the right order the right way round and make sure the clips holding the pins are in right, the manual shows this.

STEVE looks all there except possibly the pins and clips that locate the selecors to the drum, but they were still available last time I looked and will be in the box you already have anyway.

HINT It used to be cheaper to buy a 550 bottom gasket set and seperate 500 clutch cover gasket than a 500 set from Dave Silver, 06111-374-000 i think (top set 06110-323(374)-000) I may have the 06 numbers the wrong way round but the price will soon tell you!

Okay.. got my transmission working and i'm about to put the block on but I bumped into this some sort of jet in the oil channel. The right one has a jet in place but the left one doesn't.. Is this a problem?

Do you have a manual. If not, you should get one.

Those are "Oil Control Metering Valves" (or pressure reducers in real speak). They reduce the oil pressure that's used for the crank bearings to a level required for the top end of the engine. If you leave them out you'll probably get oil leaking from the top end as the pressure is too high.

Item number 3 in the attached scan.

A $10 eBay manual is a good investment!
