advice on supersport
« on: April 15, 2015, 06:06:51 AM »
I have found a 74 supersport reach cheap, complete bike.has not run for a few years.I have a friend that can take a sohc 4 in pieces and rebuild it to perfection.I know sometimes the cylinders get stuck and sometimes wont come off.But if the motor is rebuildable, what do ya'll think about the project.I would prefer a complete teardown and rebuild, motor, carbs, and all.I love the look of the suprsport.I rode a brand new one when they came out. What gave them so much more power than the standard cb 750?I figure once done, the bike would be worth about $3000.I could very well spend that on the rebuild, but its not just an old bike, its a honda vintage supersport.

If the motor isn't stuck, you're miles ahead!  I've had 2 Super Sports, and I like them over the "K"'s but a 750f is fun and somewhat unique in the body style, and the fact it has the rear disc brake makes it more unique.  As far as "more powerful", well, I just couldn't tell the difference, but the motor has potential to be a good and reliable bike as long as you keep it stock, and forget the "836 kits" and the hot cam and all.
Definately invest in a DYNA ignition and DYNA 3ohm coils as the bike needs a good hot spark to prevent plug fouling.  Keep the airbox stock, and forget pods as they're nothing but trouble.
I just sold the last of my 750F's last August, and I'm maybe gonna get another one some day to continue the saga.

Good luck on your newly acquired toy,

Oh, and not totally sure, but I believe the first 750F was the 1975 model year.

I am pretty confident SS came out in 75 too, but it may be an honest mistake on the seller's side.

I think I saw one on ebay recently listed as 74 supersport too.

If you like the look and you got it cheap, thats a win-win situation; 78SSs were the trouble bikes.

First year was indeed 75. Mine has a 1/75 build date and I bought it new. And yes indeed they ran much better.

The compression was bumped up 0.2 due to the piston
crown and head chamber design. The cam was improved. The front sprocket was dropped to 17. The tranny had slightly different ratio. The carbs have different needles and needle jets.

I managed to get the old points system to work just fine on my 550SS.
Sure was less expensive than a dynatek.

I've seen Fully restored CB's sell up to $5k - dunno how many NOS parts are required to get to that price.

They really don't have much more power, if any, than the K model, Especially the early FO/F1, I'd go as far as to say that the first model 750k had more power, If its a first model F its a 75, no F's in 74... ;)

'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

As an original owner of a 75 F the first month they hit our shores, We're gonna have to MOSTLY disagree on this  ;) A/My 75 - 76 F would run circles around a 73 -76 K.  8)  The 69 - 72 were pretty much on par with the 75 - 76 F.

"The cheapest bikes are the most expensive bikes"

The cheapest bikes sit in a pile for a long time. But for $40 or $100 I've popped on a couple.
