reinstalling gas cap
« on: February 17, 2009, 11:04:13 am »
Don't know if this is a new idea or not but......When reinstalling the pins, an easy-ish way to peen the drilled end without chasing the pin all over the garage is to place the tank so the drilled end is upward, place a small steel ball on the drilled end, then squeeze the head of the pin to the ball with a pair of channelocks.
If the ball won't stay put, stick it there with a touch of vaseline.

I used a C-clamp with tape holding a BB in place on the clamp.  I also protected the paint with some packaging wrap so the clamp would not scratch it.

Ok that sounds like a great idea for re-flanging the pin. On the other side of the cap the PO had painted the tank without removing the lock,Phillips head and threads were painted tight. I rounded the Philips and had to remove the screw but it's ruined. Can replacement screws be had at a local hardware store? Preferably, but not necessarily Allen head?

It will work, it does not fit the locking cap LATCH.  You need to attach the cap to the tank, right?

I reattached the cap with a 3m x .5m x 25m allen head and a 3m nut. I still need to do something about the phillips screw that travels through the whole width of the recall latch. Like to find a 3m x 40m allen and cut it to length. Helpful hardware man gave me a couple places to call tomorrow.
