So how do i jack it up???
« on: February 17, 2009, 07:50:44 PM »
Ok lets get our minds out the gutter. I picked up the craftsman motorcycle jack today and came home to find out that my 4 to 1 pipes run below the frame. So what i figured to do is put the jack up aganst the pipes and jack it from there. At the same time use the straps that come with the jack to keep it on. As I lift the bike the rear wheel comes up about 2 feet before the front wheel comes up. I got the lift towards the front of the frame. Am i doing anything wrong? Any tips to be more safe as i work on my bike on this thing?

Some here have added wood blocks to the jack so it lifts the bike by the frame.  That's probably the best route so you can avoid damaging the pipes, and also so you can remove the pipes if/when needed.  I think someone even did a write-up on this with pictures, possibly in the "tricks and tips" section.

Having said that, I've always just put the bike on the center stand and used a floor jack with a small block of wood to jack up the front.

yea for some reason the previous owner removed the center stand. I guess he thought doing that would make it go faster.

Two Feet !

There is a thread about jacks from not too lnog ago. As you have experienced, our pipes interfere with what is most often though of as a MC jack. They work good on Harleys and cruisers with side pipes.

I can't imagine that jacking it up on the pipes is best practices. Bad balance and such. Other options use a strap from the ceiling on the front end, various styles of wheel chocks that hold the bike without the stand.

Or take the pipes off.

It probably didn't fit right after installing the 4 into 1 exhaust. O.E. exhaust had a rubber stopper on one of the mufflers that the spring loaded stand rested against when stand was retracted. Without the stopper, the stand just flaps in the breeze, or rattles against the closest component, usually the chain.

Headers usually come with a standoff bracket for the centerstand  But, they often get lost and do as you described.

I just shim it up on both frame rails with built up wood stock shims (Mac 4-2). Works ok as long as I don't get too rowdy with it.

If you were at all handy with the steel, you could make a cradle that spaced the frame down and rested nicely on the Motorcycle Jack.

Hard to explain, I'd have to build one and show you. I have the design in my head but haven't had to lift my bike up higher than the center stand will take it in a while so I haven't had to build it.

It is also not a bad idea to strap the bike tightly to the lift in case it starts to tip.  Remember, if you remove a wheel the load shifts and so can the bike.  I use the Pit Bull MC lift which is a lot wider at the base than the Sears, but both will do the job.  Mine is mainly for my Goldwing so I wanted something a lot heavier in construction.
