Stay strong mate and stand tall.
That's how your buddy knows you and why he loves you.
Whatever your decision, it will be the right one and the humane one.

Well, i just had him put down. I came home early from work and he hadn't eaten or drank all day, hadn't even moved. I think he knew it was his time because he struggled badly but got up and went to his spot at the back door, the poor bugger could hardly hold his head up, man, he deteriorated fast. I got the vet to come round home and he quietly put my mate to rest where he sat waiting for us every day, he passed in my arms, i picked him up and took him out to the vets car and said my last goodbye. He is no longer suffering and for that i feel that i did the right thing, #$%* it was hard....Rest in peace Zack, you were a fine friend , companion and member of my small family, you will sorely missed.

Thanks all for your support, it is a pleasure to be part of such a diverse and caring community.....

I now need some time to myself....

there is nothing quite like the cold nose of your dog against your ear as you try to change your oil.  My dog will get down and stick his head under the bike to(HELP) me.  Unfortunately he can not hold a light or a wrench.  I am thinking about a side car.

You know RR it may help to think what you'd want for yourself in similar circumstances.

Mick,
I had to do what you have just done and had one pass at my feet at home a couple of years ago. The ache for both these dogs is still there, it wells up from time to time and I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes now. Someone passed the following poem along to me and it gave me great comfort and makes me smile and cry when I read it. Not so much crying now as time goes by. We did get another small dog which has helped. I said no more pets, I can't do this again but that didn't last long. Hope this helps in your grief.
Cliff

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Passing along some good thoughts...   I've yet to have a harder thing to do than to have my trusty companion put down.
You can rest easier knowing that Zack had a good home and was loved.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Damn man, my heart hurts for you... literally. I had to put my sweetie to sleep a few years ago, and just reading your words reminds me of that final moment. You did the right thing though. Everything ends that breathes and bleeds... you and he were lucky for your time together.

Thanks again for all your kind words guys , yes it was hard but i feel some relief knowing he is no longer suffering. I went out side this morning like i always do to say good morning to him and i was more lost than sad          empty. I really need to start building my bike now, not just to keep me busy, but to also try and fill a rather large hole that i am  carrying inside. I have been good all day today, well ,until i read these replies, but thats ok.
Its good to know that you guys feel the same way, it really is of some comfort to share this with you all. I used to try and tough these type of things out but i know better now, grieving is an important part of the whole messy process....

Mick,

His unconditional love will always be with you and make you a better person for caring for him. He suffers no more.

I hated reading this Retro, sorry for the loss of your pal man.

Reminds me of someones saying elsewhere. "The more people I meet the better I love my dog" and it's true... never a better companion.
