Tach Needle "Floating"
« on: March 06, 2009, 10:34:46 AM »
Hello all,

On my '72 CB500, the tach guage seems to "float" around between 6k to 7k-ish.  Is this something I can adjust with the cable or just need to replace the cable?  Thx in advance!

You mean it floats back and forth when you hit 6-7k or it just stays there all the time?

Sorry, it hits 6k and dances between 6-7k, it does go past that once the revs get past 7k or so...

If that is the only time it dances, I wouldn't think it was a cable problem.
Something going on inside the gauge I would guess- sticky point for the needle around 6-7.

Mine started doing that last summer and I assumed that it was the replacement tach that I was using.  Cable broke last month.  Running a new cable now and it's fixed the problem.

Thanks for the input.  Mine's been doing the same thing.  I'll try a new cable.

I'll put a new cable on it.  I don't know how old it is but I know the PO didn't replace it.

Would be cheaper than buying a new tach. Try a new cable and see if it works.
