LED stop lights
« on: October 17, 2005, 12:42:55 AM »
I'm chopping down the rear fender on my 73 750 and I dont have room for the stock tail light assy.
My question is will a stop lamp with 300 ma draw tax the electrical system or will it be fine?
I farted and made my son cry.

300mA is next to nothing (in tail light terms).  You'll find the stock stop lamp draws over 2 amps (based on 25 watt bulb).

if it is an LED make sure you run a resistor on the taillight or you will not eb able to tell the difference between the tail light and brake light.

Here's what I did with LED's for my bike tail lights, turn signals and license plate light.  I used a truck LED unit, modified it and made a billet aluminum frame.  The turn signals use standard 1157 red led "bulbs" (2 per side).  The license plate light is a billet housing with a custom circuit board.  On the subject of resistors, since I used standard 1157 replacement "bulbs", they come with the built-in reisitors for hi-low brightness.  The tail light has a circuit board inside that "chops" the incoming voltage to about a 50 to 60% duty cycle, giving the appearance of low brightness.  When you apply the brakes, the chop circuit is bypassed, giving the led's their full-on brightness.

Nice set-up. I need to get the lights in hand then I will get started on the fender mutilation.
Where did You get the lights from?

I actually got all the led's off ebay, and then made the billet stuff to fit.  If you go that route, search for "led l.e.d. lights".  You can also get the 1157 led's from PepBoys or Autozone or other auto stores.  The truck tail light you may have to order from the auto parts store.
